Hi Jessica,Alesis support here. The 4 top would be good for someone trying to learn the bare basics, but the 7 top may be a lot more useful for an 8 year old who may be adamant about practicing and learning drums. Since this isn't set up like your typical drum kit, getting used to the feel of a full drum kit wouldn't be possible with the CompactKit 4, but this product is excellent for practicing your timing as a drummer, as well as getting familiar with playing patterns.
