Very edible no-prep emergency ration
With the weather changing some of the normal load drivers carry for emergencies might be too. That could include what food is carried. In summer you don’t want to leave things that will melt or go rancid in the vehicle and in winter you want to avoid stuff that will freeze. As part of that, to cover all year without change, a couple of people have asked me about lifeboat rations, which are logical choices given their long storage life and design to be stored for all weathers and parts of the world. I’ve been including these in emergency kits for over 40 years, since first encountering them while in the forces, and while I’m making some fundamental changes to my vehicle and BO kits due to a change in what vehicles we’re going to be using, it seemed a good time to review the loads and refresh some of the supplies, and a chance to write up a review.Current cost is £6.95 for 1 pack, but they are also available as 2 packs plus 500ml of water for £16.25, 3 pack plus 500ml of water for £20.50, 6 packs for £40.90, or 24 packs for £121, with free UK delivery in all cases. I’ll leave you do the math as to which is best value! For survival use it is recommended that a single pack will provide sufficient nutrition for 3 days, but note that would only provide a little over 800kcal per day. That might be sufficient if you are in a fixed position without much energy expenditure e.g. on a life raft awaiting rescue or stuck in your car in snow or a traffic jam, but minimal if you were working hard. However, given the 500g per pack and compact size, if you need to consider either weight when carrying your rations or bulk when storing them then these offer a good compromise.People’s opinion as to edibility vary. The texture in use is a crumbly powder. Taste is mild, biscuity, with a hint of vanilla. I find them very acceptable, if boring after a while, but if you don’t like the texture when dry they do make a great thickener for a survival soup or stew with foraged meat and plants or other lightweight but flavoured rations, such as cup-a-soup or stock cubes. I use them as a cost-effective, compact, long-storage-life extender (recommendation is 5 years but you won’t notice any difference after MUCH longer!) with other items in vehicle kits, caches and BO packs. I’d recommend buying a single pack to start with and trying them both dry and in other ways and then, if you like them, go for more wherever you think they will fit in your preps.

Stored in car
I bought these to keep in my car “just in case” they are well packaged. They taste ok like biscuits basically if not a bit dry though. They are very calorific for obvious reasons. The emergency water bag is a Brucie bonus.

Worth buying again.
Exactly the same as crumbly shortbread (albeit lacking the buttery taste). I liked them ands the kids liked them. Good for leaving in the car as emergency rations. I'd buy them again! Not really enough water though so it's a little strange to include 1 pack with 3 ration packs. Good, but slightly pricy.

Great purchase
Very quick delivery and well packaged. Glad with this purchase as it's handy to have also great for bug out bags although you have to consider how many you get to put in the bag due to the weight. Brilliant expiry date too. Would recommend to everyone.

Highly recommended
These rations have everything you need to survive out in the wilds or if stranded in a location with no shops,it comes with water packs but would recommend you to buy more water packs, this item will keep your strength up for days.

Prepared
We were worried about the possibility of power cuts and lack of food availability in the home over winter so purchased these. The contents do not look that appetizing, but I am sure when we come to use them they will be welcomed.
