Cool pentode, bro (updated)
Update: It took a LONG time for this to break-in. It took months before the tube gave me decent power without distortion. The amp puts some mojo on the sound (translation: it colors the sound), but it sounds great. Especially with dialog in movies, it make everything so much clearer and a little more dramatic. The downside: Friggin' grounding issues and noise. Ugh! So close to a great character amp. If only...Neat design with good quality components. Even if I bought this direct from China as a kit, it's still cheaper to buy from Nobsound domestically. The sound quality is okay. Even with a little distortion I can still listen for hours without wanting to rip off my headphones and throw them. My unit appears to have some grounding problems, as well.Allegedly the final output stage is a high-quality op-amp. (A TI NE5532? I didn't check.) It really struggles to push enough current to drive my 55 ohm headphones. (I mean, without distortion.) Op-amps are cheap. A pair would probably be better. Just my opinion, but a $100 headphone amp really should be able to drive a 600 ohm set of cans beyond a gnat-sneeze level of sound. However, overall I don't regret this purchase.
