The Good, The Bad and the Ugly

Directed by Sergio Leone, "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly" is one of the most famous of the Italian Spaghetti Westerns, filmed almost entirely in Europe. The Spaghetti Western plays a large role in Quentin Tarantino's film, "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood" which takes a nostalgic look at the Western. Over the past few weeks, I have been enjoying seeing various way the Old West has been represented in the movies, including the best of the Spaghetti Westerns such as this film."The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly" is a lengthy epic set in 1862 in New Mexico during the Civil War. Many people are unaware of the Civil War history depicted in this film, which is a valuable reason in itself to see it. The Union Army turned back a serious Confederate push through the Southwest to reach California at the 1862 Battle of Glorietta Pass, a battle regarded by historians as one of the key engagements of the Civil War. This film is set in the aftermath of the battle, during the Confederate retreat following the destruction of its supply trains.The film turns on an effort by three outlaws to recover $200,000 in Confederate gold buried in a cemetery. The outlaws, each out for himself. form shifting alliances and fight with each other to recover the stash. Clint Eastwood plays a taciturn bounty hunter known as Blondie. Lee Van Cleef, the most vicious of the three, plays a sadistic killer, Angel Eyes. The third outlaw, Tuco, played by Eli Wallach, is a comic figure yet also ruthless and unrelenting in killing and in his quest for the gold. These three outlaws at times team up and work together, especially Blondie and Tuco, when it seems advantageous to do so. But they also will abandon, double-cross, and kill each other without compunction, when given the need and the opportunity.The film is meant to capture the American Southwest with its desolation and small settlements during the Civil War years. The early parts of the film show a great deal of violence, killings and hangings against the background of the Confederate retreat. The three outlaws function separately but are gradually brought together. Some of the most memorable parts of this film take place in a Union prisoner of war camp and on a battlefield. This film portrays convincing the folly and anguish of the Civil War as the outlaws use it to pursue their own private ends. Of the three outlaws, only Blondie shows a degree of sympathy with the soldiers and their unfortunate fate. The final part of the movie shows what has become an iconic gunfight between the three outlaws, spaced triangularly from each other in a cemetery where the gold is to be found. The scene builds slowly and with high dramatic tension.This film builds deliberately with music and long shots of the characters' facial expressions and of the surroundings adding a great deal to the story. The film is presented almost like an Italian opera with its music, gestures, and passion. Even so, there is a gritty realism in this film, with the ever-present dirt, the random, senseless violence, and the war. The main themes of the film are greed and ignorance, set against the West and with some religious symbolism in the background.The Spaghetti Western was heavily critiqued at first, but films such as "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly" have deservedly come to be recognized as among the best of the western genre. This film offers a different, harsher portrayal of the West, showing the consequences of rampant individualism and violence, than do the earlier American Westerns and a different way of understanding the history of the West. Westerns of a variety of types offer fascinating insight into American history and character. It is valuable during this time of pandemic to see different portrayals and interpretations of the American West and to think about the West, its history, and the character of its people.Robin Friedman

I, like many reviewers here, hold this film in high regard and esteem. There has never been a film made like the Good, the Bad and the Ugly, and there will never likely be again. With that said, many of us have purchased multiple copies of the film beginning with the advent of DVD in the late 90's. The 2004 double DVD was a particular favorite.When Blu-ray hit the scene - I picked up the "Man with No Name" trilogy. The color timing with that release was all wrong, so in 2014 when a 4K was of the film was released, I bought that version to replace the 2009 version. It looked a lot better, but even so, the new 4K version still had color timing issues that just didn't feel right. Fast forward to 2017 with the KL double release of both the extended version and for the first time in Blu-ray, the theatrical version. The release of the theatrical version was the only highlight of that KL release. The rest was a mess. The extras transferred over looked horrible; and again, the color timing was not correct.The April 2021 4kUHD: The folks at KL went back to the drawing board and this time focused first and foremost on correcting the color timing. They succeeded beyond our wildest dreams. The film has never looked better. With that said, the version presented here is not the extended version, it is the theatrical only. This will not please some folks, and it would have been nice to include the extended version as those extended/cut scenes had their color timing also corrected and are included in this release as extras. The audio is the original soundtrack in both lossless audio and the original mono. This hasn't been available since the laserdisc era of the early nineties. What extras transferred over look a lot better than what they did in the 2017 release to.This 2021 release is not perfect, but well worth the double/triple/quadruple dips a lot of us have taken purchasing this film over the years. It just simply has never looked or sounded better. That doesn't mean we are not still waiting for the grand-all release of both versions of the film with all of the extras and all of the commentaries carried over, but we're getting closer. It'll take a company with some deeper pockets to make that happen, but for now, this will be my go to when I need my fix.

I bought this 4K UHD from the Amazon US and can confirm the region free 4K UHD worked as expected in my UK player. I haven’t tried the region locked blu-ray and I don’t expect it to work. I suspect most people that buy this version are looking to upgrade from the previous disappointing versions anyway. A previous reviewer mentioned the disk was noisy when being played. Mine is whisper quiet, so no issues there.It arrived from the US in a week, which was several days earlier than expected. The VAT was paid at the point of sale by Amazon and no other taxes were requested.I gave 4 stars because although the picture has been greatly improved it is not close to reference material. Considering the issues with the previous blu-rays, this restoration is a great leap in video quality and the DTS 5.1 audio is decent also. There doesn’t appear to be a UK release or any other versions on the horizon, so this looks by far the best option at least for the foreseeable future.PS the film is brilliant but you already know that!

Excellent delivery service--it arrived ahead of schedule--but the release itself is awful. I would urge diehard fans of the movie to avoid this edition, and buy an old Region 1 MGM DVD instead. I bought this hoping to get a definitive HD print of the theatrical cut of TGTB&TU and am seriously thinking of returning it. It has the theatrical cut on Disc 1, however:*it has a strange, sandy-coloured hue and the image is too bright/washed out*it has all the updated sound effects from MGM's restoration instead of the original 'spaghetti western' pistol effects (these can be heard on the Italian language track)This is a very disappointing release of one of the all-time great movies.

L’un des meilleurs westerns, quoi-kennedy certains critiques qui n'ont vu là qu’un western « spaghetti », catégorisation que ne cessera de rejeter le « Maestro » qui rendait, à sa façon, un « hommage » à  John Ford . Ce film vaut ses 5 étoiles, tout comme  Il était une fois dans l'Ouest . De toute façon, le genre commençait à s'essouffler sérieusement. Leone a tout simplement donné un grand coup de pied dans la fourmilière. Voilà pourquoi ça reste un « film important ». Mais dans cette édition Blu-ray (franchement décevante, comme le constatent quelques clients sur le site), et ce malgré la précision du piqué qui est une nette avancée par rapport aux anciennes versions DVD, il y a un gros hic... D'abord, il existe plusieurs éditions (au moins cinq en France... une vache à lait pour la MGM, ce film). La première se trouve dans un digibook ( Le bon, la brute et le truand  déjà en rupture de stock), la deuxième dans un steel-box avec Blu-ray 4K et DVD inclus ( Le bon, la brute et le truand , loin de faire l’unanimité) et enfin celle que je commente ( Le bon, la brute et le truand , la moins onéreuse). Hélas, toutes (à souligner), sans exception, censurent la « version cinéma » (161 minutes et non ces 178 ou 181 minutes). Shame on them, shame on MGM, honte à eux, honte à la MGM ! Je viens de revoir Le Bon... (et déjà lors d'un premier visionnage, il y a quelques mois, j'avais été très déçu, comme pas mal d'admirateurs de  Leone  et de ce « classique » rangé à la 4ème place des films les plus adulés au monde selon le site IMBD). Aussi, les années passant, le film risque de prendre un sacré « coup de vieux », surtout avec des éditions aussi calamiteuses. Qu’attend donc le studio pour sortir le film dans sa version cinéma (volonté de l'auteur) ? Globalement, les qualités ne ressortent pas tout à fait dans ce Blu-ray. En fait, pour un film aussi essentiel, c’est un massacre. Si dans la filmographie du « Maestro » je préfère  Il était une fois la Révolution  et  Il était une fois en Amérique  (ses deux derniers films sortis respectivement en 1971 et 1984), « Le bon, la brute et le truand » reste un film d’une grande valeur artistique qui mériterait une édition digne de ce nom.Plusieurs scènes ont donc été additionnées inutilement (au moins trois, soit plus de 12 minutes superflues) : d'abord celle tout de suite après l'épisode de Tuco chez l'armurier (un moment inoubliable !). Ces scènes coupées par Leone en post-production (donc non voulues par lui) intronisent trois gorilles mexicains embauchés par Tuco pour buter Blondin. Et là, ça s'éternise. Pire encore : ça bousille le récit. Leone en avait conscience. Alors pourquoi ne pas avoir considéré sa volonté ? Surtout que le public, lui non plus, n'est pas dupe. Hélas, il suffit de regarder la moyenne des notes : malgré cette gangue et grosse bévue, la MGM s'en contrefout. Ils ne lisent pas les commentaires sur une plateforme telle qu'amazon. Ce que je ne m'explique pas, c'est donc la présence de ces scènes supprimées par Leone lui-même. Elles n'apparaîtront même pas dans les salles italiennes, françaises, américaines et anglaises lors de la projection du film (re-sic). Le biographe Richard Shickel le confirme on ne peut plus clairement. So, WTF ? Si Shickel l'indique précisément (voir bonus), elle est où la logique ? Franchement, j'hallucine devant tant de bêtises ! Leone trouvait le film trop long. Il a donc élagué plusieurs scènes (celle mentionnée + deux autres après la bataille sur le pont). La MGM (studio qui engrange des milliards de dollars chaque année) se moque donc 1) de Sergio Leone et 2) du public. Toute la lucidité du Maestro était là. Tuco essayant de rallier ses collègues, un coq déplumé à la main qu'il met aussitôt dans une marmite (cette scène dure au moins 3 longues minutes...), c'est incompréhensible. Leone s’était par ailleurs exprimé sur le sujet. 35 ans plus tard, pourquoi donc vouloir les conserver dans toutes les éditions Blu-ray ? De toute façon, les studios continueront leur politique de sabotage avec  Il était une fois en Amérique ...Bref, c’est clairement du « pillage » (à la différence de  Il était une fois la Révolution , où c’est le contraire qui s’est produit : à savoir que lors de sa première projection en salle, les producteurs n’ont pas tenu compte du choix de Leone : ils avaient tout bonnement censuré les flashbacks... et ratiboisé la toute première scène. Celle-ci fut tailladée lors des projections en Italie et aux Etats-Unis parce que Rod Steiger qui pisse contre un tronc d'arbre avec plein de fourmis dessus, ça n'est pas très élégant (sic). Et allez donc comprendre pourquoi la MGM restitue aujourd'hui et les flashbacks et la première scène dans l'édition Blu-ray de  Il était une fois la Révolution , respectant enfin la revendication du cinéaste ? Pour revenir à  The Good, The Bad and The Ugly , bien sûr que nous avons raison de ne retenir que la version américaine et française (telle que nous l'avions vue aussi il y a trente ans à la télévision). Toutes ces parutions en DVD et Blu-ray voulant montrer ce qu’a filmé le cinéaste (même si ça n'est que trois minutes de plus par ci, trente-cinq secondes par là, etc.) rendent la mise en scène inefficace et le film complètement différent. Et comble de tout cela : en français, sur les scènes qui ont été greffées, ça n'est pas la même personne qui fait le doublage. Bref : deux voix différentes ! Super ! Du coup, les spectateurs se sentiront une nouvelle fois bernés ! Nous prendraient-ils pour des cons, à la MGM (on ne peut le dire autrement) ? Ah, mais oui, ça n'est plus la MGM, c'est Walt Disney Studio qui gère... Rappelons enfin que les trois acteurs principaux (Clint Eastwood, Eli Wallach et Lee Van Cleef) s'exprimaient dans leur langue pendant le tournage (1). On les retrouve dans la version anglaise. Tout le travail se faisait ensuite en post-machin. Lors de la sortie du film aux Etats-Unis, les acteurs italiens et espagnols étaient les seuls à être doublés. Quant à la compréhension entre Clint Eastwood et Sergio Leone, elle était forcément difficile puisque aucun d'eux ne parlait la langue de son interlocuteur. Par conséquent, les échanges se faisaient par gestes et quelques bribes de mots. Au vue de la déception, mieux vaut patienter avant de trouver une édition digne (2).__________________________________(1) L'année suivante, on retrouvera Lee Van Cleef dans  La mort était au rendez-vous  de Giulio Petroni, un western italien...(2) Aux États-Unis, étant conscients de ce problème d'édition et du mécontentement de nombreux spectateurs (ouf !), il est envisagé pour avril-mai 2021 l'édition cinéma restaurée. Espérons que ça suivra rapidement en Europe et en France tout particulièrement (en général, il faut compter un délais de un à deux ans : si ça sort en 2021 aux States, faudra sans doute attendre 2022 ou 2023 ailleurs). Only got 2 minutes into the opening title sequence and then the film wouldn't play. Description mention condition as good. But it is so bad it won't even play. I can only throw it away or try to return it. 2nd time this has happened so why goods are not checked before they are sent is only going to produce unhappy customers

Sergio Leone's final part of his man with no name story played by Clint Eastwood who is ably supported by Spaghetti western legends Lee Van Cleef and Eli Wallach who play for all their worth in this epic story set at during the Civil War in America this version has had 18 minutes of footage restored to the running time, this restoration called for the two surviving actors Eastwood and Wallach to return to the dubbing studio to redo their dialogue tracks you will probably hear how much Wallach voice has changed with age.The story starts as a bounty hunt and ends up being a race to a cemetery to find a hoard of stolen gold all the while Leone's partner in film making Ennio Morricone supplies the soundtrack to the genre defining images which have been copied by everyone in some way who made a western after this, there is a Quentin Tarantino quote of the front of the card slip case of this edition which says "Cinematically Perfect" I have to totally agree this is arguably the best Western made with "Once upon a time in the West" a close second.This DVD is in 2:35 aspect and now has an excellent 5.1 surround track which makes the bullets fly and the music really stand out I wonder if the Blu-ray version released in the U.S. is any better?
