It's not necessary to operate the cameras but having sd cards in the cameras is the only way to get the best of your cameras capabilities. I wouldn't use the cameras without them.

It is needed to operate the camera but holds months of videos before overwriting the oldest images. Camera can be set to record continuously or individual events. Mine has been set to individual events and has used 22GB of 256GB after only 3weeks of use.
