Island of the Lost: Shipwrecked at the Edge of the World

Real and interesting characters go on an adventure in the far South Pacific looking for tin on a remote island in a world of near non-stop wind and rain on a schooner dragging anchors breaking loose and marooned on the island for eighteen months before building a 17 foot decked sailing contraption and saving themselves - quick read and well written - non-stop survival story.

The ship was lost on Auckland Island, an edge of the World graveyard for wrecked ships with storms and freezing temperatures year round.This account intertwines the original source memoirs of the survivors in a remarkable tale that captures not only the adventure at the bottom of the world, but the flora, fauna, and geography of the landscape. It is certainly a book that will provide insight into the depths and heights of the human spirit.

My wife and I loved every bit of the story. It’s very well written and completely insane to think that it actually happened.We listened to it on a long road trip and it made the time fly by. I would recommend it to anyone in a similar circumstance or who loves an amazing fiction-that-isn’t-fiction type story.

A story of determination and unbelievable ingenuity. Raynal is a genius engineer and inventor, and the Grafton crew as a whole are to be admired and respected for their command of their situation. The second crew, however, left me frustrated by their lack of will, fore-thought and effort. It’s a study of the same human experience with very different human responses. A great read!
