I ate a lot of Indian food growing up so honestly, when I started cooking vegan myself, I was a little sick of the same standard Indian recipes. However, I heard great things about this book and got it from the library. I liked it so much, I bought it. I think what makes this book so great is, although it includes a few standards (usually modified to make it faster to cook), there are so many new and inventive takes on Indian flavors that you won't find elsewhere. It's also great for people who need to decrease their reliance on soy or gluten because it relies primarily on beans or lentils and vegetables. I will say, though, that you get a lot more out of this book if you have access to commercial vegan yogurt or make your own (there's still tons of recipes without it though!) Stand out recipes include: Savory oats hash - no more mushy oatmeal! Indian style fluffy flakes. I make this all the time. Spicy baked cauliflower florets - I added in broccoli, too, and it was a delicious healthy snack. Makhani Vegetable pot pie - amazing pot pie with a tomato coconut milk base. It got demolished at the potluck I brought it to. Tempeh and cauliflower in spicy paprika yogurt sauce - yummy Vegan paneer and spinach in tomato sauce - I love that she has a vegan paneer recipe. It is fairly soft and much different than tofu. Broccoli onion fritters in spiced yogurt -this one is so good and not like anything I've ever had at an Indian restaurant. Puffy restaurant style naan -a standard but a good recipe. I used half whole wheat and it worked great. Steamed yogurt dessert - this is the only dessert I've made and wasn't really sure what to expect but it was a very nice pudding with cardamom flavor. Beautiful pictures throughout. I think this would be a great book for anyone.

I LOVE this book! I wanted a recipe book that would provide delicious recipes for my non meat and dairy diet. I also wanted to cut down my gluten intake. I love Indian food and love the fact I can cook a curry or dal and freeze it for work or later in the week, which makes the recipes very versatile. This book is a great addition to my cookbook shelf and I'm really enjoying finding new recipes to try. Richa is very considerate suggesting options to adapting recipes to make them gluten free, which is brilliant. She also makes suggestions to make recipes soy free, and process-food free. A real effort it made with this book to make the recipes accessible to all. I've tried a few recipes so far and they were tasty and delicious. Richa explains her background and history with food and the general traditions of the cuisine. I was concerned about buying so much of the spice ingredients but they were so cheap and well worth the flavour they provide. Also most of the recipes require the same spices! So I've been able to make recipes on the fly because I have the necessary ingredients. Fab! I love that the flavours make the meals so tasty that meat-eaters love them. This is the first time I've heard of Richa but I had to go and check out her blog to see her other recipe suggestions. The only issues I had with the book: Firstly the measurements are in US cups which is really annoying to work out to grams/ounces. I had to buy separate measuring utensils for the recipes to make sure they're accurate. Also instead of saying, for example, 4 tomatoes, it would say 1 cup. So I have to cut up the tomatoes to know how much I need rather than by how many actually tomatoes. This is quite annoying. Secondly, some of the recipes are very long-winded and take quite a bit of time, especially if you're doing a few at a time. This may quicken the more I do it, but I found it taxing at times. Also there isn't a picture for every recipe, although she does clearly try to show them all (albeit on different pages). However these things do not outweigh the benefits of the book. Great book for those who love brilliant tasting food.
