Cabaret Mechanical Movement: Understanding Movement and Making Automata

Useful intro to "the world of mechanisms and the business of making things move"!
Published by Cabaret Mechanical Theatre, a traveling museum, this little book is a gold mine of whimsically illustrated essential principles and vocabulary for "persons who want to make "automata, moving toys or mechanical sculpture" -- or like my 12 yo great-nephew, warring robots. If he gleans even one useful tip or idea from it, I'll count it gift well chosen!Brava to "Mary" for a neat mailing package. Thanks to an extra strip of cardboard cunningly applied, the book arrived unbent.

This book is the BEST! one of my professors in undergrad recommended it and it's still my go to book. I have a MFA in sculpture and have been a display artist for companies like Urban Outfitters/Anthropologie. I use this book as reference for a lot of my kinetic installations. the illustrations are AMAZING! and it's so simple to understand and even if it didn't have the illustrations you would still understand how parts move that's how descriptive it is. highly recommend if you're ever thinking about doing movable works.

This is a wonderful little book.
This is a wonderful little book. The book's many illustrations helped clarify the basic mechanical movements that are used to make automata. Well written in a light and humorous manner.

Great book that easily explains how machines work
Wonderful book for those learning about how machines work. I used it to construct my first automata. Highly recommend.

You get the sense of momentum, both figuratively and historically, of the Automata movement.
It is an A+ book. Though small in size, it has a big heart and passion for the art form. David Wilson

Sketchy but very useful
A very useful introduction to making automata. It begins with some basic principles of physics and mechanics and goes on to describe the application of these to automata with good practical tips.Chapters are: Some Principles, Levers, Shafts, Cranks, Cams, Springs, Linkages, Ratchets, Drives & Gearing, Control (electrical), The Checklist, Bibliography. All illustrations inside the book are sketches, and although a number of automata are shown in this way, sufficiently to deduce how they work, there are no patterns to make them.I was initially disappointed at the size of the book and the lack of patterns (I should have read the description better!) but now think it will be a valuable guide and reference when I eventually begin to build my own machines for fun.

This was best of all the books that I ordered
It does not have motors but handles so one could attach a motor. This was best of the books that I ordered except for the Lego one. It gives one the mechanics of levels etc. but then gives a model to make
