An absolute gem!
A teacher in my primary school used to read this to my class regularly and I never knew what the story was called and have been looking for it my entire adult life. She would always entrance me when reading this book and I'm elated to have finally found it! I now read it to my daughter who is almost 4 years old and she loves it as much as I Did! (Thanks Mrs. Collison for being the best storyteller and always inspiring me to read as a kid)

A fun book for the whole family. Watch the Youtube video of the author too reading it, GENIUS!
You have to watch the Youtube video of Michael Rosen reading this book for the full joy that this book can bring. I have a 7 year old reading this book with such enjoyment. I thought originally she was not going to enjoy it as it was quite easy for her to read and thought she would get bored quickly. We watched the video together after she was shown it in school. This in itself was an experience I could relive a 100 times again just for the pure look of joy on her face. Now, each time she reads it to either myself, my wife or her sister. I can definitely recommend this book, and hope it brings your little one as much fun as it has mine.

Brilliant story, poor illustrations and font
I loved this book as a child and was delighted to find it for sale on Amazon. I have read it to my 2 year old daughter, who is obsessed with chocolate cake and the likes, and she equally adores the book. She requests it again and again and can recite sections by heart. She finds it astounding that Michael gets out of bed at bedtime (exclaiming everytime we read the page where he sneaks out of his bedroom that "you can't get out of bed at bedtime!!"). We have read it so much to her that me and her dad both know it off by heart. For that reason, I have given it 4 stars. We often "read" it to her from memory when it is requested in the car, or nights away, and she has been perfectly content to just listen, without the physical book in front of her. The story itself is fantastic, likely to be found especially funny by 5/6 years olds hearing it for the first time, but still absolutely excellent and relatable for all ages from 0-120 years! It's told from the perspective of Michael (the author) about a time when he was a little boy, when his mum made his favourite treat, chocolate cake. For readers who do not know it, I'd recommend you watch the YouTube clip of Michael Rosen (author) reading it first, else the book by itself could be hard to read. The illustrations are confusing, and in my opinion poor and very disappointing. They don't support the story telling very well. They are dark in places; not very immersive, captivating or engaging. My daughter gets confused on the pages where there are multiple images of Michael (see photo uploaded, eg. Drawings are in a timelapse sequence, such as images of him washing the plate, drying it then putting it away). She doesn't understand it's all the same boy and starts thinking it's his mum or dad). However I imagine an older child would understand it. I also think the font is not very easy to read compared to other children's stories (the typeface just makes it hard) as well as the layout/the way the text is arranged. I understand they are trying to capture the performance reading, so it reads as the version you can hear the author read on youtube, but I feel it fails to deliver without the parent knowing the video. Whereas in most children's books, the illustrations are so beautiful or detailed that they nearly tell the story by themselves. Personally although the love the story itself and am very glad to have the book, if there was another version with different text or images, I would swap it in a heart beat. I would still highly recommend buying this book (and I have bought it as a present twice now), as the story is too brilliant not to, but as an adult reader I am disappointed with how this has been translated to written format and hope another version may be released in future.
