Nothing special
I found it a bit boring at times. I guess you might find it interesting if you want to find out what life was like in Canada eighty years ago. Not much happens, and the style is not particularly riveting. I found it lacked this “something”, and it discouraged me from looking for any more works by this author.

with some beautifully observed characteristics about life and relationships
Munro writes lyrically about her sex and their development. There are some fixations which abound in this collection of tales [definitely a coming-of-age collection] but all are set in her familiar landscape, with some beautifully observed characteristics about life and relationships.

A superb book by a master storyteller. Alice Munro ...
A superb book by a master storyteller. Alice Munro is a genius at unfolding the secrets of the human heart wih the the accuracy of a surgeon's scalpel. She is warm, compassionate and ruthless!

Insightful
This is the second book by Alice Munro I've read after "Hateship, Friendship, Courtship, Loveship,.." and I would definetely recommend it.It goes through the life of the protagonist Del and her ancestors living in a small Canadian town (Jubilee), where tradition and the "four churches" (Anglican, Catholic, United and Presbyterian) seem to persist over time.On the one hand, the novel depicts deeply family affairs and relationships in which hypocrisy and envy are widespread. On the other hand, it gives an account of the lives of women in the Noth-American society of the XXth century, for whom getting married and delivering children appeared almost inevitable. Mel is highly-intelligent, independent and gifted, but that might not be enough to succeed in such a social environment. As a non-native English speaker, I would also recommend this book for advanced learners willing to depart from standard lexical patterns and enrich their lexical skills.

IRRIMEDIABILMENTE NOIOSO

You live the time and the place in this book. My own experience of the early 50's was nothing like it, yet it's as though I recognize it all.

Story beautifully describes feeling doubts and dreams, and questions not known but felt unconsciously. Loved it from start to finish!
