Motta | Coffee Leveling Tool

Nice little tool for distributing your coffee. Despite what other reviewers have claimed, This tool IS adjustable. You simply hold the base and turn the top to adjust level.

As a new owner of a Lelit Bianca, I was looking for a levelling tool; and without thinking, bought this one. I quickly realised this was not clearing the sides of the Lelit baskets as it is 0.5mm too small. The Lelit baskets and VST baskets require a 58.5mm levelling tool. Looking for a 58.5mm levelling tool isn't the easiest of tasks. I've seen many people recommending the BT Wedge, and while I'm sure that works well, I didn't want to spend £150 for such a simple tool. Luckily, I stumbled across a 58.5mm Scarlet Grande Tre Espresso Distributor, which is the same price as this Motta tool. The scarlet fits the Lelit baskets perfectly, and because it's adjustable, I'm able to configure it to sit flush on top of the basket and level 18 grams of coffee. I'd imagine it would fit the VST baskets too. Even if I needed a 58mm levelling tool, I don't think I'd buy this Motta tool, simply because it's not adjustable (OK, I'm sure mine wasn't adjustable but it appears these are indeed adjustable). I'd highly recommend opting for an adjustable scarlet distributor (they are available in every size).

Absolutely brilliant. I have a Rocket Espresso machine and I was getting some spurting when using my naked portafilter. By using this before i tamp I am getting a nice even bed of coffee which is producing amazingly consistent shots with a single stream from dead centre of the basket. And no more spurting! Would say this is essential for the home barista.

Does a very good job of evenly distributing fresh grinds in the portafilter basket. Only slight criticism is that there is a slight gap between the edge of the leveller and the basket, so sometimes some grinds get stuck against the upper edge of the basket - easy enough to push them back down though when using a tamper to compress the coffee puck. The leveller makes it much easier to get consistent extractions compared to trying to distribute grinds by hand.

Fits well and distributes perfectly. Ok to clean…

Beautiful piece of coffee equipment. Very well made. Great heavy feel. I use this only, without tamping and it has improved my coffee on my commercial machine 10 fold!

Makes using a bottomless portafilter child’s play, literally. Our 9 year old loves using it and makes a great shot!!!

Solidly built, adjustable height, and most importantly it does improve extraction.

It is adjustable and it works very well. Nice and heavy. Black part is made out of what I believe is aluminum and has an aluminum screw welded or forged as part the inside of the black top which threads into the stainless steel tamp to adjust the depth of the tamp going into the portafilter. There is a silicone o-ring that fits between the inside of the top and the outside of the stainless tamp which helps lock the depth and prevent grounds from getting up inside. Very well designed and machined for a no frills leveler. I'm sure the o-ring will need replacing at some point but I would expect this to last a lifetime if its not too badly abused.
