Works well, within limitations.
I rather stupidly agreed to make a cake for my friends and their 100-person wedding. I needed a cake leveler that was big enough to level and cut in half all of the layers, the largest of which were 12.5" (the bottom tier was supposed to be 12" but that is another story/product review), then 9" and 6". This guy seemed to fit that bill so I ordered it and obsessively watched many, many videos of people blithely slicing through cakes, their one-handed insouciance making me feel confident and secure that my cake, too, would turn out perfectly level with this tool.Well, the first time I tried to use it things went south quickly. I couldn't get it to slice the rounded top off one of the layers I had- the leveler wire just kind of pooched up and over the cake. It is also very wide, so the wire itself is somewhat impossible to keep taut because one needs one hand to hold the cake in place and the other for the leveler. Having feet on the bottom of the posts might help, just to keep the whole thing more stable. At any rate, my dreams of lovely, flat-topped layers cut perfectly in half seemed as if they were about to evaporate. I was very depressed. My husband braced himself for whatever meltdown might occur, given that the wedding was in two days and this whole cake adventure had been extremely stressful already.I took a deep breath and decided anything would be better than me trying to level and slice the layers with a serrated knife (I am completely unable to cut or slice straight), so I figured I'd give it another shot. The key for me was to sort of embed the wire in the cake where I wanted it to slice and then slowly work the wire through. This recipe made a very dense, almost poundcake-consistency, which might have had something to do with it. That technique, of forcing the wire into the cake and then maneuvering it around slowly worked out fine- it still wasn't perfectly level, but it was level enough!Slicing the layers in two pieces was much easier and again, while not exactly 100% level, the two new layers were flat enough to construct into the filled tiers. Using a gentle sawing motion and sort of rotating the layers seemed to work the best.By the end of slicing through and leveling the tops of my many layers of cake (creating 12 slabs in all), I was mildly in love with this cake leveler. To be fair, I have a gift for making things uneven, so I feel like someone without this issue would achieve better results. It's not a perfect tool, but it works much better than a knife if you take your time and work the thing gently through the cake. I don't know if I will ever use it again (I'm more of a bread baker), but it helped me produce a massive, generally even and level wedding cake, which was delicious to boot, so I have no regrets about buying it!

A+ very easy to use, I got the results I wanted
I have made and decorated cakes unprofessionally since 4h! I have always used a long bread knife to level cakes and split layers (then usually had to fix my loosided cutting with frosting) - I have seen these, and wanted one for a bit and I finally got myself one! I will never go back. It trimmed the top of my slightly cooled cakes (I should have waited a bit longer to trim but I was pretty excited to try it out) cakes in seconds, then with a very (very!) easy adjustment I was able to cut my 2 cakes into 4 equal layers ( I made 2, 6inch cakes so I was able to set them side by side and trim them both at the same time). They look perfect! The lines on the side made this cutter so easy to adjust and use. Cutter and the wires are sturdy and well made.**I failed to mention before posting that I lucked out and got this as a return item so I was even able to save a little money from full price. It looked brand new and came with the original packaging.

Works great!!
Works great. Just cut slowly and let the tool do the work. Long strokes work best and the tool will cut the cake without much effort. This tool will give you perfectly level clean cuts if you use it correctly. If your feeling push back as your cutting then your going too fast. If your having issues with crumbling or cuts that aren't level then your going too fast. Go extra slow the first few times you use it so that you can get a feel for how it works.

Great product for the $
I never used a cake slicer before. This was my first time. I read reviews on several different types and chose this one. It was easy to use. You can use it to slice the cake in different directions also. The only thing that was difficult were The Notches as they are not numbered so you must count them to make sure they are even. I was okay with that since how often am I going to use this thing anyway?

I'm no Baker but this slicer made up for it!
Ok, I'm no Baker but decided to make a four layer, multicolored, cake and needed this. I did get the cakes sliced to the thickness I wanted (it is adjustable) even though my cakes were hard as a rock on the outside, somewhat soft on the inside, and caved in on top. This slicer didn't seem to mind and did a fantastic job.

Product as depicted
Overall the product worked like cheaper Wilton ones. However, the blade tends to tear the cake more than thinner blades I have seen with other systems. Was great because I could get it when my other broke after many years.

The size is perfect to fit big cakes and it cuts perfectly
The size is perfect to fit big cakes and it cuts perfectly. I read a couple of reviews that it has complicated because you needed to make sure they are both ends of the cable in the right mark and stuff, but I am glad I didn't pay much attention to that... You just need to count the marks in both sides and you are good to go, this allows you to have so many different heights you can cut and it even allows you to cut in diagonal. I love it, is a great product.

perfect
This is the third cake leveler I've bought and by far the best of the lot. It's a little wide for the smaller cakes that I usually make, but it levels perfectly. Love it! By the way, don't waste your time and money buying the Wilton Ultimate Leveler, it makes a disaster of your of all your hard work!

As described
Works as well as the reviews say. One thing though, there should be little feet on the ends so when sliding back and forth it's not scratching your counter. Otherwise it works great

Does the job!
I bought this for what it is mean for and that's to level out the tops of cakes and make layers. I've given this four stars simply because it is hard to tell when it is evenly spaced when adjusting without measuring - I think it would be a good idea to number or colour code the edges, in fact, I might just do that myself with permanent markers. But, it is easy to adjust by pulling the edges in slightly and 'saws' through cake easily, just let the cake rest and cool down first. This can also be a bit hard to grip so practise to see which is more comfortable to keep the momentum going because it is large but it needs to be to tackle all sizes of cake and gently push towards the blade as you cut through your cake in order to steady it. It's a handy tool and is well made, i'm pleased with it and would recommend.

Perfect
Wow. Worked better than I thought. I seen bad reviews on these saying they dont work or ruin the cake. But not for me. Cuts a perfect neat layer in no time. I got the large as make all sizes of cakes. The length helps with the sawing motion to get through the cake.My cakes are very soft, moist and sponging and this went through soo easily. I think the harder/dryer the cake the harder it will be to cut through as easy.

Reasonably priced and works well
Worked like a charm. I was a bit worried when reading other comments but my item came in one piece and was easy to use and fit for purpose. It definitely helps watching a YouTube video on how to use a cake leveller if you’re a newbie like me!

So much easier to cut straight!
So much better than a long knife! Beware that steel tho, it can get your fingers like a saw! Pic of my second results: nice clean cuts. (For me at least.)
