The Conjure Cookbook: Making Magic with Oils, Incense, Powders and Baths

Finally, a good book of hoodoo formulas!
This book contains 198 recipes and formulas for many classic conjure products. There is also an extensive table of substitutions, both by scent and by function. In addition, the author provides attribution for each of the recipes. Hoodoo formulas are notoriously hard to come by, and there are very few good books on the topic. I'm happy to say these formulas are pretty much in keeping with the hoodoo tradition as I have learned it. Ms. Felix has done a lot of research and seems to have a good enough grasp of the topic to keep from repeating the sort of errors you find in the Slater formulary and similar books. If you are just beginning to make your own products I think this book would serve you well as a starting point, as you can follow these as written. If you've been at it for awhile and already have your own formulas you will still likely find some useful ideas here. I long ago gave up the search for the "one true formula" for most of these recipes (because even the "published ones" are open for review as this book shows in the Fast Luck discussion). Personally, I am always tweaking my formulas and I transfered extensive notes from this book into my own formula book. I may have half a dozen or more formulas for many things, like Crown of Success or Love Me, but I'm always open to more. I'd be surprised if even the most experienced conjures didn't find something useful here.Almost all of the formulas use available ingredients, but for those occasions when substitution is warranted there are about 15 pages listing well-considered substitutions for a couple of hundred ingredients. If you think about substitutions as more about different ways to achieve a goal then these make sense. The substitution by function section also mentions the primary use for many herbs. The attributions are refreshing - the author honestly says she invented many of these as well as provides the sources for many others. In addition there is an extensive bibliography, which will point the interested reader to additional references. As for what is not included: there are very few recipes that list the relative quantities of ingredients. Anyone who mixes scents knows how crucial that is. There is only basic instructions on making things, but my advice is go slow and let your nose (and intuition) be your guide. Also, usage of the formulas is not covered in any detail -generally just one sentence that describes the main function of the formula (although many are self-explanatory from the names). A good companion book describing the methods of making incenses, oil and powders, such as one of Cunningham's books, will be helpful for the beginner.

Practical and useful
This as some would say "tiny" book, may be tiny in physical sense only, for it provides great deal or hard to find information. It is ideal for Hoodoo and Cojure practitioners that have solid base of Herbal Materia Magica and doctrine of Signatures knowledge , but will come handy and informative for any practitioner really.Formulas are applicable to many tradition and paths, for many are universal. Furthermore many traditional formulas are revealed, or authors own ideas have been provided on how they should be made. And let me tell You, Miss Talia has some brilliant knowledge of Hoodoo herbalism, and these formulas in Miss's book I liked the most are actually those labeled as "Invented". Sure I'd tweak as few, for example Uncrossing formula etc, but that's only my opinion. The few I did not like either came from late Sir Slater, or were imitation of commercial formula. It's a well researched, useful Formulary, with abundance of great formulas, kept in secret by most for economical reasons. That means we should really , highly compliment Miss Talia's effort and idea, to demystify formula making, and to keep them from oblivion and lose, as well as to provide one with knowledge to either make their own condition oils or at very least be able to recognize good ones, and evade plentitude of fake, colored, artificially scented oil base oil solutions sold princely online.I honestly believe that this inspirational, reliable and knowledge-packing book shall not disappoint YouMany Blessings - Shadow of Shadows magick place ; [...]

Thoroughly impressed.
I bought this book along with 1 other, written by the same author & I am absolutely in love & grateful for both of them. I've had my eye on this book for a while but never bought it, as I felt as though I already had pretty much every recipe I'd ever need. While I did already have just about every recipe thats in this book (granted, different versions) even I still found a few that were new to me. Definitely exceeded my expectations, especially considering I even thought about cancelling or returning it due to feeling like I may not have much use for it. I'm very happy that I got it. I absolutely love the portion of the book that talks about substitutions; while I do agree with another reviewer who stated that they felt a little confused about some of these formulas because most of the ingredients didn't really seem to be relative to rootwork, I still feel good about the recipes nonetheless. I would definitely recommend. It doesn't have "every single recipe you could ever imagine" but it does have all of the necessary staples that make a good conjure cabinet, in my opinion. I also think the price is great for what it is, so if you're eyeing this book, get it.One thing I did want to point out just to show a little more about this book, the recipe for "Van Van" oil is not that hard to find, it's everywhere on the internet; the recipe for Van Van oil in this book however, is quite different & honestly shocked me a little. Keeping that in mind, I'm still happy with the book, I even found a recipe for a particular oil that I've been looking for for a few weeks now so either way I'm very happy with my purchase & again I would recommend.
