Powerful and Inspiring.
I went back to my childhood with this book. It was probably one of the first books we read as a class in junior school when I would have been about 8 years old. It stuck with me long enough for me to want to find a copy and read it as an adult, and I wasn't disappointed. David is a wonderful character. He escapes from the concentration camp as a 12 year old, and embarks on a journey on foot to Denmark, travelling through Greece, Italy, Switzerland and Germany on his way. A beautiful and powerful read.

A Journey of the Soul
'I Am David'is an extremely moving story, beautifully envisioned about a young boy who has been deprived of all knowledge of the outside world and makes a journey of discovery across Europe. The unfolding awareness of the boy and the various encounters he has with the people that he meets, from whom he learns as much about himself and the world as he is taught by the journey itself, is told in a completely compelling style that I found interesting as an adult but which is very accessible for the younger readers I have shared it with. (About 10 and up, I would say.) The Hidden Crown (12 years +)A magical princess, a warrior prince, evil wizards, dragons and monsters and a land that must be saved from tyranny. Labyrinth (12 years +)A Sword and Sorcery adventure - it's easy to get in, but can you find your way out? Little Devil (7 to 10 years)A lot of children up to a lot of mischief with the help of a little devil.

Great classic book. Great service.
This book is wonderful. I first read it when I was around 9 or 10 years old when a much loved teacher who wanted to feed my passion for reading gave it to me. The beautiful but sad story touched me so, I now want my children to read it. Admittedly, my children are yet too young to understand it, being only 2 years old and 10 months but now I have a copy to keep forever. I am sure my family will definitely have a good read at some point. It is a child's book but with adult themes and shows them that not all children grow up in wonderful, loving homes and that bad things can happen but it also shows how dedication and determination can help a person achieve anything, conquering all barriers. This book is one to read if you liked the Boy in the Striped Pyjamas or the diary of Anne Frank.

An excellent book
This is my all time favourite children's book. it is not an easy read and can at times be confusing and perhaps slow paced but it is so beautifully written and for me to remember it 35 years after it was read to me shows how it captured a part of my heart. It is set in the Cold War but we don't know where and it is all about the journey that David makes as he escapes from a concentration camp and travels across Europe in search of himself and a new life. The story allows us to follow David as he learns how to smile, learns how to love and learns how to believe in God. Fabulous!

A Beautiful Story
I remember reading this book in my childhood, and I have re-read this as an adult, its a great story with powerful themes and metaphors that are as relevant today as they were when the book was originally published. In some respects the story may seem unbelievable as David seems to cross frontiers with ease, that said a lot of children's books could be given the same label and I feel that this book has no real flaws. It tells a riveting narrative that is packed with sadness, tenderness and innocence. This book is well worthy five star rating.
