A classic for a reason
This is a standard Lutheran devotional. It has prayers for every possible occasion, they are well written, historic, moving and brief. There are introductory prayers for morning and evening prayer service, and then specific prayers for morning and evening of each day of the week on a two week cycle. The presumption is that this forms the base of your prayer life and sets the tone, and then you add prayers of intercession for loved ones, friends, and the needs of the Church, etc.The rasion d'etre of this book is simple, durable practicality, and it does not disappoint. It's heavily bound and sturdy enough to hold up to decades of use, and comes with a ribbon marker.Even if you use other devotional books or pray a breviary on a regular basis, this makes a great go-to when time is short, or as the foundation for a more complicated prayer rule.

I just love the way Luther writes these prayers they're very encouraging very solemn and sacred. The book is very nicely put together. It should last a long time.

Luthern Book of Prayer
Copyright in 1951, Concordia Publishing House, St. Louis, MO - Twenty-Third printing - Printed in The United States of AmericaI have been enjoying this book since receiving it.It has daily prayers for morning and evening (one page each). The book starts with a preface that will prepare you and explain the usefulness intended of this book of prayer.page 7 is The Lord's Prayer. The Prayers for Mornings and Evenings starts with Sunday morning page 10 and continues through four weeks to page 65.So there is a month of non-repeating suggested prayer. It ends that section with a general morning and evening prayer.(pg 66 & 67)Then Prayers for Certain Times and Seasons starts on page 70 and continues to page 114.These are very useful and some are very specific as to needs. This section includes "Holy Week" Monday through Easter Sunday.Prayers Pertaining to National Affairs begins on page 116 and continues to page 131.This section includes National Holidays as well as some in general such as "In Days of Unemployment" pg 122.Prayers for Various Occasions in Individual and Family Life starts on page 134 and continue to page 181.This section continues with Selected Psalms 182-189. Then continues with various specific prayers including;a list of The Ten Commandments and a dividing of The Lord's Prayer into it's Petitions with explanations. You will never recite The Lord's Prayer with better understanding than after reading this.Next is Christian questions and Their Answers on pages 208-211.The book ends with a Table of Contents and a few blank pages useful for personal notes or prayer reminders.Over all this is a very valuable and useful book for a beginning Christian or a long time Devote Established Christian.Thumbs up and may God bless you for reading this complete review.

Not just a prayer book
I bought four of these for Christmas, for each family member. We were able to say the Christmas prayer together as well as some others since. Of course the prayers aren't meant to be an end-all prayer manual. Luther's humble heart and lavish love for God however leads the way by example, helping to develop a mindset we need to have, to stand in awe of our Savior and Father. I love Luther's prayers so much that I often write them in my prayer journal before adding mine. Does God listen more to Luther's prayers? Of course not, but I consider them a vehicle, an arrow toward a closer, more loving yet respectful, relationship to my Father in heaven. It is worthy of note also that sometimes when you don't know how to pray in a particular situation, what to say, where to start, these prayers help you to focus, to meditate, to come up with words of your own.The small catechism, which I have separately, is woven throughout the book, which is helpful and timely. I am newly Lutheran of the Missouri Synod but think these prayers, this book, would be good and meaningful for anyone who wants to develop a closer relationship to God.
