Must have for tinkerers. Works well.
Fantastic bit of kit, works a treat for IDE drives, can't speak for other combinations yet. First saw this type of product in a high street catalogue shop, unfortunately it was online / credit card etc. payment only, as I don't do credit / debit cards etc I was forced to find alternative where I could pay cash, thanks to Amazon gift card, problem solved, and as I had PSU and various leads already, instead of paying GB£12, I paid GB£1.95. Works without additional drivers with LINUX, this should be advertised!!! Now have 3 old IDE drives back in use as rotational backup drives. NOTE!!! If you plug this into computer without drive and PSU connected properly it will not register as anything, this is not a fault. Thank you seller, will buy from you again.

Has design issues
The device's IDE connector plugs directly into the drive's IDE socket but the edge of the device extends beyond the edge of the IDE socket as can be seen in the photo, which partially obscures the Molex power socket of the drive! All Molex plugs that I have come across have grip lugs and because the socket is partially obscured by the device, it is impossible to plug in the Molex plug without shaving off the grip lug on the device's side and even then it is a tight fit.I have tried extending the IDE socket away from the drive by fitting a male-male converter to an IDE ribbon cable but it degraded the signal and did not work. Shaving off the grip lug on the Molex plug was the only solution in my case.Other than that, it worked fine and with a scavenged old AT PSU, I was able to put my old DVD and HD drives to good use at a fraction of a converter kit.

Excellent must have bit of kit for the computer builder.
Excellent little product, does exactly what its designed to do, helped me clear down several old IDE hard drives. Motherboard manafacturers would do well taking note of the usefulness of such products, and possibly include them with the modern motherboards without an IDE slot.

BEWARE: THIS IS DATA ONLY, YOU MUST SUPPLY POWER SEPARATELY
What is not mentioned is that this provides DATA ONLY, THERE IS NO POWER.You must SUPPLY YOUR OWN POWER SEPARATELY for this to work. That doesnt make much sense because if you have the ability to power a SATA drive, then you probably have the ability to read it too. Total waste of my time.

Does what you want
For something as cheap as this is, it works a treat, both for PATA and SATA. I've now managed to wipe about 30 old discs prior to giving them the sledge hammer treatment before finally sending them to the dump

Great for both 2.5 inch and 3.5 inch IDE drives.
I bought this to read a 3.5 inch IDE drive as my newer PC (and any pc make in the last 10 years) doesn't have IDE connections. Being a 3.5 drive, a single USB can't provide enough power, so the ability to add a sata power cable to this means the drives can function correctly. Just be warned that to read 3.5 inch drives you will need to provide it with a sata power connection.Im not sure how long this cable will last, however it seems solid enough and perfect for occasional use to access old drives.

a to b with usb
very pleased with this, given the price i had low expectations i must admit.with it i have been able to salvage data off of a couple old laptop ide drives [2 1/2"] which it powers from a usb3 port.its been fine, hasn`t disconnected or anything pc sees the drives straight off.it has saved me a lot of hassle, all for a couple quid. nice one :)
