Steven Spielberg's new film, Ready Player One, is to be discovered in the cinema on March 28. The soundtrack is signed by Alan Silvestri, a composer who has recorded music from some of the most profitable films in Hollywood history (Forest Gump, Le Pole Express, Captain America), which earned him two Oscar and Golden Globe nominations and three Grammy Awards. Although stylistically diverse, the unifying voice of Alan's work is an unmistakable rhythmic melody whose themes continue to embody the excitement and drama of cinema for generations of movie lovers.

This is NOT the various artists version of the soundtrack...
Please note - this is NOT the various artists version.I have to give this 5 stars because it was totally my error in ordering it, however it is one of only 2 things I have ever returned to Amazon.I made the mistake of reading another buyer's review without realising that there are two soundtracks for this movie and the 'various artists' one hasn't even been released yet (it's April 18). This version is what I would call the instrumental backing music and if that's what you want then it will be perfect, just be careful to order the right one!

Classic Silvestri
When I heard John Williams was unable to score Ready Player One I was disappointed at first, even though I really enjoy Alan Silvestri's film scores. After seeing the movie the disappointment was gone. This is a great score with some wonderful catchy themes. Possibly Alan Silvestri's best since the Back to the Future trilogy.

Great Selection of 70's/80's!
I bought this off the back of watching the movie a second time and loving it! I also have a penchant for collecting CD's, the excellent choice of music in the film, and the 80's in general. In fact, even if you've never seen the film, this is a pretty decent selection of tracks you might like from that era regardless! With staples like 'Everybody Wants To Rule the World' and New Order's seminal, 'Blue Monday', pretty much every track here is great. Even includes the relatively unknown Springsteen track, 'Stand On It', which I've always loved and been after in some form or another. The CD itself is packaged nicely, had no faults with delivery or condition of the case upon arrival. Plays fine, and is lovely to look at, with the film cover providing an injection of futuristic sci-fi and nostalgia, too.One thing I will say is that this soundtrack doesn't include *all* the songs used in the movie. I noted Van Halen's 'Jump' and Joan Jett & The Blackhearts' amazing 'I Hate Myself For Loving You' ommited from this OST. Always strikes me as odd when they leave a few tracks out, but still - Most of the tracks used in the movie are on here, and they sound great.

Ready Player....Game Over
I ordered this before watching the film (something I rarely do unless I know what I’m getting, like Star Wars for example) however I was taken along by the hype and the fact this is Steven Spielberg and Alan Silvestri, two masters of their craft and two people synonymous with my growing up. For Spielberg, Duel, Jaws, Close Encounters & E.T. (not forgetting his production work on Poltergeist, Gremlins, The Goonies and Back to the Future) were regular annual viewing (and still are). For Silvestri, his soundtracks are slightly less impactful on my childhood (bar the fantastic Back to the Future) but equally impressive, with Who Framed Roger Rabbit, The Abyss, Forrest Gump etc proving that he’s a master of score composition. The prospect of them both together on a film so closely linked to works they had done 30+ years ago was something I had to have.Sadly, while watching the film the soundtrack didn’t grab me the way I had anticipated. The main theme, which crops up throughout did elevate certain scenes but as a whole wasn’t as rich as past Silvestri works. Sadly neither did the film itself. Considering the movie is very much based on nostalgia for a time that I certainly a) remember and b) still look back on very fondly indeed, I found it rather dull, certainly when we are in The Oasis. I’m certain the CGI used today will look extremely poor when compared in 2045 when the film is set. To me, it already looks a bit dated and not from the nostalgic nods to the 80’s. I would have expected photo-real avatars so that ‘players’ could be anyone from Steve McQueen to Marty McFly via Jon Snow or Lara Croft. So, when I listened to the soundtrack in isolation, I was hoping to find treasure in many cues I may have missed in the action on screen. Sadly I didn’t. It’s a good competent score but it’s not great. It’s certainly not up there with Silvestri’s best and doesn’t really call for repeat listens. It’s actually quite forgettable (possibly much like the film in my opinion), which is a big disappointment. I really wanted to love this. After repeat listens, I’m still trying to dig beneath the surface but with little luck.Sadly, or brilliantly (delete as appropriate) the best bits of the score are those which borrow heavily from ‘The Delorean’ cue from Back to the Future. Both the Main Theme and End Title tracks on CD 2 are probably enough to cover the essentials of the score as they encompass the best bits but that’s not selling the soundtrack very well.I wanted this soundtrack to be a Greatest Hits of Silvestri’s work alongside what was mooted as a Greatest Hits of Spielberg. Neither could ever reach those lofty heights of course but sadly neither have come close.
