When Tatsumi set off for the Capital, it was with fantasies of earning riches for his poverty-stricken hometown. Instead, his friends were murdered and Tatsumi finds himself at the center of a bloody revolution. With an evil Prime Minister, the Secret Police, and the armies of an Empire on one side, and the elite assassins known as Night Raid and a handful of rebels on the other, it might sound like an impossible battle for Tatsumi’s new allies to win. However the playing field is leveled with the addition of a legendary set of unstoppable weapons, the Imperial Arms. Unfortunately, to use an Imperial Arm is practically a death sentence in itself, for while the Arms are indestructible, few wielders can survive using them for long in AKAME GA KILL – THE COMPLETE COLLECTION! Contains: Episodes 1 - 24 Audio: Japanese, English Subtitles: English BONUS Review: Ending very different to the manga - TL:DR So I’ve written a very long review, I didn’t mean for it to be so long, but if you don’t want to read it I’ll just say definitely buy this, but the anime radically changes the ending from the manga and skips a few arcs, so the ending is very disappointing as the manga is just so good. It’s an amazing story, but if you’re the kind of person that doesn’t want to see the deaths of main characters then just move on haha. And I’m so happy they released this collectors edition, I’ve started buying all the anime I like on Bluray & like getting collectors editions. But please buy the manga of Akame ga Kill and read it, it’s much better than this anime as this anime rushed the ending & completely changes so much, so it’s far less impactful. I’m very disappointed with the ending, as the ending of the manga is so good. But the anime is still worth the watch & you should definitely still buy it. Ok so the anime is a pretty good adaptation up to episode 19, halfway through the episode is where the changes start, and then from episode 20 it just veers off into completely new anime original content, and it’s all for the worse. They completely change everything, episode 20 completely changes everything, how characters die (and this is a big one since these 2 deaths were done so well in the manga, I’m so disappointed with them) & kills other characters that don’t die in the manga. They just completely rushed the ending and cut characters & arcs completely out of the anime, they then merge multiple different fight scenes into one fight, and cut the final battle with Esdeath in half, it’s an epic battle in the manga, and also how Akame triggers her trump card is completely different and makes no sense in the anime, plus the end of the battle is completely different. I was expecting this as up that point they had only got just past the halfway point of the manga, I couldn’t see how they were going to fit 7 volumes into 5 episodes. The changes really ruin the story in so many places, like the rescue of Tatsumi, in the manga it’s fuelled by his girlfriend going to break him out single-handedly as she’s madly in love with him, but in the anime they rushed to this point and they’re not even dating at this point. And this is a massive letdown as this scene was so good and impactful, in the manga it starts out as she busts in and takes everyone on herself, so badass. This is the Claymore & Elfen Lied animes all over again, anime that are faithful up to the halfway point and then they veer off away from the manga and wrap the story up in a few episodes and ruin the story. I’m an extreme stickler for sticking to the manga, I don’t want to see any changes or filler. I absolutely hate having a story have 2 completely different endings depending on whether you read the manga or watch the anime, and I know that more people watch anime than read manga, so although the manga ending is the real ending, and far better, you end up with more people seeing the anime ending. So I’m going to start talking about the manga now, it’s my 5th favourite manga, it’s amazing, it’s the most devastating manga I’ve ever read, given it’s extreme violence it’s hard to believe it’s a Shonen. From very early on you learn that any of the main characters could die at any time, and I got more attached to these characters than nearly every other manga I’ve read, it’s rare that I get so attached & I don’t know why I got so attached to these characters. So I found all the deaths to be devastating, from the very first one, and they’re all so brutal, on a few occasions I thought they had gotten away and were safe only to get suddenly cut down. A number of times I had to close the book for a few minutes just to accept the loss. But I recommend everyone read the manga, it’s actually a much better experience than the anime, the pace is amazing, the action scenes are wonderfully drawn and all the girls are so lovable. The plot of the story actually focuses more on Tatsumi for most of the story, not Akame, she’s actually more a secondary character until the end and doesn’t have a lot of dialogue, although she has the best battle scenes, and I love that most of her battles are short, like a real sword battle. Tatsumi is a boy from a countryside village who’s going to the capital to make money to try save his village, but the capital is full of corruption, it’s ruled by a very young emperor who’s merely a puppet of the real ruler, the Minister Honest, a truly despicable person, he also has a son, Syura, who’s actually even more violent, they’re the 2 most evil characters in the story, but you see far less of Syura in the anime, he’s far more brutal in the manga and has a lot more scenes, his role is cut to nothing in the anime. But the rest are not so black & white, there’s actually some good guys in the empire, like Wave, Run & Bols, even Esdeath has a soft side to her that comes out when dealing with Tatsumi & behaves like a love sick schoolgirl, she’s actually really cute, you’ll end up feeling for her, even though she’s a total monster, but you see far less of this side of her in the anime. There’s another character called Seryu that I truly hated, she’s completely delusional & actually believes she’s fighting evil, she kills the first member of Night Raid & it was a big blow for me, as I really liked her & wanted to see more of her, and it was the shock of suddenly losing a main character & in such a brutal way. The characters in Night Raid are the boss Najenda, Akame, Sheele, Bulat, Lubbock, Chelsea, Susanoo, and my favourites Leone & Mine, Leone’s English VA is the VA for Misato in Evangelion, one of my favourite anime characters ever, probably THE favourite, Leone just has such a great personality. Then Mine is a pink pigtail loli tsundere, like all tsundere she’ll grow on you over time, I love her. And she’s an actual tsundere, a lot of what’s called a modern tsundere just stay a b***h and they never soften over time. Mine is my favourite character, but initially I took a massive liking to Sheele. Night Raid is the assassin wing of the revolutionary army, who are trying to overthrow the corrupt government, their job is to assassinate the leaders or anyone causing trouble to the people. The pace of the story is pretty breakneck, I would have liked the story to be dragged out with more backstories to flesh out the characters more, I would have much preferred if Akame ga Kill Zero wasn’t a spin off series and was incorporated into this as flashbacks so the story focused more on Akame, because even though the anime is named after her she’s more of a secondary character for most of the story. Esdeath is the main villain of the series (and one of my favourite female character designs ever) & is unbelievably powerful, no one else comes close, but the minister Honest is the one pulling all the strings, he’s a total lunatic, he’s controlling the young naive emperor. Kurome is Akame’s sister, she fights for the empire and both are hell bent on killing each other, even though they truly love one another, it’s a really interesting relationship and their final showdown is great in the manga, again it’s very different in the anime. Every time you think you know what’s going to happen Takahiro does something different & mixes it up. There’s a prequel manga called “Akame ga Kill Zero” that covers their past, I’ve just finished buying the volumes but haven’t read it yet. Also the relationship between Tatsumi & one of the other characters wasn’t something I suspected, I thought he would end up with a different character, I won’t say who these are, but again you don’t really see this in the anime which is a massive letdown. This collectors edition comes with an outer slip case, art book & 4 picture cards, the outer case is done with a nice matt finish except for the characters eyes which are done glossy and it looks great. I just wish the art cards had Akame & Sheele instead of Bulat & Susanoo, the art book is fine. So I’m still going to give this anime 5 stars even though I’m massively disappointed with the ending, it badly needed another 12 episodes to finish the story properly, but at least I get half the story I love so much. When I rewatch I’ll probably just stop at episode 18 as the ending being so different really annoys me. But if you’re never going to read the manga then it makes no difference to you, but just know the real ending is much much better, nearly 1/3 of the story is missing, but it’s still worth buying.
