This film is the famed Royal Ballet production of Romeo and Juliet. This historical performance stars Margot Fonteyn and Rudolf Nureyev as the quintessential stage lovers. It captures the greatest dance partnership of our century at the peak of their careers.

my inspiration!
This particular performance of Romeo and Juliet was the first ballet I ever saw, and has been the ballet that has inspired me throughout my training and start of my career as a dancer.. I cannot possibly explain how much this music and choreography moves me, it pulls at some parts of my inner bits that nothing else does! I recently saw the Macmillan version of the ballet, and I was just so frustrated that it wasn't THIS version, Nureyev's version, that I could hardly enjoy it! Nureyev manages to completely capture the character of the music in every part while also staying truer to the play and the storyline, as well as portraying the characters themselves perfectly, with all the charm and youth they need :) Having Margot Fonteyn as Lady Capulet is so moving, she plays it so beautifully, it wrenches at your heart strings at Tybalts death.. And of course, Nureyev himself is wonderful. The benchmark of all male dance partners :) (to me anyway!)I used to have this video until a few years ago when it was deemed too old and well used to be good anymore :P but after seeing the Macmillan version last night I am inspired to find this one again and satisfy my high standards!

Nureyev portrays the perfect youthful Romeo
The most convincing portrayal of Romeo & Juliet in any form of theatre , including stage, opera and ballet. Nureyev portrays the perfect youthful Romeo ...... a star by virtue of his looks and his supreme dancing. Margot Fonteyn's Juliet is superbly convincing despite her years. It would be easy to watch the whole ballet, or any part of the ballet, many times over.A true collector's item.

DVD of iconic ballet performance
Arrived within timelimit stated. Good condition although not the best reproduction - but it was a 1966 production so quality would not be as good as digital recording.

Appalling picture
This is definitely 5 stars performance of the superb dancers in all the leading roles. If you ever can see them dancing at all, as the picture is fuzzy, so you can't even make out the faces sometimes. Such a pity. Hope this recording gets digitalized and soon, as it definitely deserves better than this. So looked forward to this and so disappointed!

Incomparable
This is possibly the greatest film of any ballet ever made. It is incredible that this dvd is not available in a European format for the UK. This is a production by the Royal Ballet, Covent Garden; it stars our own Fonteyn, the greatest English ballerina; the thrilling choreography is by Britain's Kenneth Macmillan; but currently it is not available in Region 2 format, and many people in Britain and Europe (including me) cannot watch it.There are several excellent dvds available of Prokoviev's "Romeo and Juliet" (not least a recent Royal Ballet film), often superbly photographed and recorded. The dancing is frequently marvellous but no other version reaches the extraordinary artistic heights, the passionate intensity achieved here by Fonteyn and Nurevev. They perform as if possessed. Sometimes, fine dancers in more recent versions can seem disappointing when placed in comparison.Very striking in this film is the astonishing vulnerability expressed by Fonteyn as Juliet, her spirit actually seems younger in this role than some recent ballerinas who are actually half her age. Fonteyn's Juliet breaks the heart. As for Nureyev, he is perfectly cast as the driven Romeo: no other dancer has his sensational magnetism. Both these incomparable artists appear to give of themselves completely, as if burning up as they perform. When this production was first seen at Covent Garden, people soon realised that here was dancing quite out of the ordinary -which should be recorded for posterity. This wonderful filmed performance of "Romeo and Juliet" needs special attention from the Copyright Owners: it is a highly important document in the history of Ballet. This film urgently requires restoration, if possible as a Blu-Ray edition (for which there will be demand in all parts of the world), to bring the film to the best possible level of clarity. At the very least it requires issue in a format enabling people everywhere to see it.
