I don't know I returned mine because it had no air!

For the USB model, it needs to be plugged in to use, and for the battery model, it does not need to be plugged in

Q: Do you have to use an app to work this fan?

No you do not. There’s a power button on the top of the fan.

Q: Would it move a good deal of air the lenghth of a bed ?

It depends on what you want to cool with it. If you're trying to cool your head then probably not. I have them in different places in my house. Even though the air is on sometimes you have little spots that don't feel very cool when you're sitting. That's the perfect place for these fans. Because it turns on with one touch of your finger and I nearly never have mine on full. Usually on one or two is plenty enough to blow the air about 6 to 8 ft away. So probably not for the end of your bed
