Can this drive be formatted as mac os extended (journaled) to act as a bootable backup or time machine backup for mac os?

Yes, absolutely. Having said that, not sure why you would want to have a very fast (and expensive compared to regular HDDs) Solid State Drive as a backup device. In my view, you are better off with a normal hard disk.

Does it require a lithium battery as stated in specifications, please?

Does this drive come hardware encryption as nearly everyone requires this if ever misplaced?

The drive has SanDisk encryption software on it when you get it. There's a Windows and Mac version but no Linux. Personally I would recommend VeraCrypt for encrypting your drive instead. It's open source, audited for security, and well known to be almost impossible to crack (even for the FBI). Plus it's free. Compared to BitLocker it's miles ahead: BitLocker only comes with Windows 10 Pro, is honestly more difficult to set up, backs up your encryption key in OneDrive (so Microsoft can decrypt all your files or if they're hacked so could anyone), and it's closed source with no way to verify how secure it is. That last criticism applies to the SanDisk encryption software too. I'm not saying it's malicious, but when software is intended to provide security and privacy through encryption it should be open source. Most commonly used encryption software and systems trusted to be secure are open source (e.g. the software running on web servers to provide HTTPS, the server software itself, the OS under it... all open source). I work with servers run by big companies and they would never trust closed source encryption. You shouldn't either. TL;DR: Download VeraCrypt for free, it's extremely secure and does what you want and more.
