Q: Is this light enough to be sat on toddlers lap to play with in the car?

If you were stationary, like stuck in a horrible snarl up on the M5, then yes, but please don't use it when driving. In the event of a crash it'd be a heavy-duty missile and could cause real damage to your little one.

Q: What batteries and how many are required please?

We gave this to our grandson yesterday and it’s 3 AA batteries but before we gave it to him there is no mention anywhere of batteries on the box itself
