Great book for geeks like me
I purchased this book as a lot of my family are on one medication or another, especially the older folks! - This book is what the doctors and nurses used to see what medicines they can prescribe, it details any possible side effects and how medicines react with other medicines. The be honest it's a bit OTT for me to have this book, but still it does give you some peace of mind knowing what is in the medicines that you are taking. The only thing I was disappointed about was that there was a label saying that this book was hospital property, so if the hospital has disposed of this book (it is last years) they should have removed the label.

A totally brilliant book on all types of medications, side effects and formulas. The book was easy to understand without having to have any medical experience, and is useful to refer to when prescribed any medication

Extremely useful reference book which enables me to check on prescribed meds - necessary since I recently had acute renal failure due to the number of drugs (mainly painkillers) which I had been given which were toxic to my kidneys.

Good book but not quite the whole story.
This is a very good book and a useful guide for the medical profession. There are 1164 pages of small print listing pretty much all the drugs commonly in use in the UK together with their numerous side effects and contra-indications. It is not intended for the lay-person who may find it a bit bewildering (many medics may feel the same way about it) and it is certainly a hypochondriacs charter for those who are that way inclined. It was compiled by the pharmaceutical industry and consists largely of drugs that that have been patented and are at least potentially profitable to it.This leads to some distortions with non-patentable drugs such as the non-toxic anti-inflammatory curcumins (found in the spice turmeric) being left out but the anti-inflammatory drug paracetamol (which is so toxic that people use it to commit suicide) is included. Turmeric can be obtained from almost any grocery store or in capsule form (preferably mixed with black pepper to aid absorption) from Amazon.Other examples are the selective serotonin uptake inhibitors such as Prozac used to treat depression. These make you feel happier by increasing the serotonin levels in your brain by inhibiting an enzyme but have many side effects that can last for weeks after you stop taking it. One the other hand 5-hydroxy tryptophan is a compound produced normally in the brain and converted naturally to serotonin produces a similar level of happiness without long lasting side effects, but this is not mentioned in the "Formulary".In short, this book gives a very valuable insight into the use of the products of the pharmaceutical industry but do not expect it to contain any references to drugs and remedies that have not or cannot be patented, however good they might be.
