Essential reading for teachers
This is a really important book for anyone working in schools. The increase in SEND in schools, and the complexity of the issues many schools are facing, means accurate identification and clarity of language is essential in providing effective provision. This book encapsulates complex issues and explains how they may present in clear language. The areas covered in the book include many of the challenges we increasingly see in schools. The book is well researched, and written in a way that ensures finding clear guidance for specific issues is easy. Practical and realistic ideas and suggestions are provided for teachers and leadership teams alike. The book explains the need, discusses how it may display in children, and then offers suggestions. Just what every school needs.

A really helpful resource for all primary school teachers
“All about SEMH: A Practical Guide for Primary Teachers” explores a wide range of social, emotional, and mental health issues within education. Topics include anxiety, attachment, ADHD, FASD, situational mutism, and self-harm. Sarah’s introduction is important for reflecting on our use of language and the underlying biases and ableism. Throughout the book, there are various case studies which are very relatable and the differences and needs surrounding each topic are explored with empathy. For each topic, Sarah offers a number of practical strategies. These include making adaptations to our own communication style, providing structure and routine, supporting regulation, and maintaining links with parents and carers. The book is accessible and thought-provoking. It is undoubtedly a really helpful resource for all primary teachers, especially those who are just starting their careers.

A thorough and practical guide in relation to helping vulnerable learners
I like that the different sections of the book act as a practical guide for how I can adapt my teaching in the classroom and implement positive change. This is particularly true in relation to practical strategies for children with mental health difficulties. My favourite section relates to anxiety because different emotional aspects are considered. The comment about how “fear can be expressed in different ways” led me to cogitate on (1) my own experiences and (2) the range of potential emotional responses in the classroom (which includes irritability). It’s a refreshing take that challenges presumptions.
