Q: Is the wood stainable?

The wood has a finish on it so I would think that it would need to be sanded. I would think it would take paint with less preparation. I can tell you that it’s very sturdy and well made.

Q: What is actual step dimensions, it appears they are tucked slightly under the next step; is the 9" the total footing space for getting down securely?

The stairs, themselves, are a little over 9 inches width - that's the total footing space for the dog to go up or down securely. My 90 pound Lab goes up and down just fine. There's a board under each step that pulls up for the stair to sit on securely. This is a great product, very sturdy and secure.

Q: How much does the four step ladder weigh? Does the non-slip fabric have an odor?

I have the 3 steps and it's not heavy at all. I'd imagine that the 4 steps might be a little heavy but not too heavy to pick up and use. The fabric on the stairs is perfect and does not have an odor. I spray mine with Lysol after every use. Theses are really good steps and I highly recommend them.
