Having been a Beach Boys fan for longer than I can remember, I wasn't in any need of a collection of any sort - I bought this for a friend who had recently become interested in the Beach Boys, and who asked me to get him an ideal 'starter pack', so to speak.So I looked through the CD's available, looked at the track listing, and decided that 'The Beach Boys - Platinum Collection' was the way to go.In general, I'd say that this box set is a good overview of The Beach Boys through the years: It's got all their big hits, and shows off the wealth of talent that has been a big part of the American music culture since the early 60's.However ....There are some glaring omissions such as: 'Somewhere in Japan', 'Good Timin'', 'Full sail', and 'Getcha Back', which are much better than the poorer songs on the collection such as: 'Marcella', 'Student Demonstration Time' and The Boys version of 'Rock n' Roll music'.The first two disks seem to be top-notch though, and on the whole, I'd say the collection is good value for money, and a good place for a new Beach Boys fan to start.

Whilst not an avid Beach Boys fan I took this opportunity to buy this 3cd set which has all the hits and several important album tracks. Whilst not strictly chronological each disc covers a stage of the Beach Boys career. Disc 1 the early career including their first single release, Disc 2 their prolific classic period, and Disc 3 their later period. Each disc opens with some of their most prominent songs from the era making each disc play like a traditional album than just an anthology and it seems to work. I bought this version rather than the later expanded version because for some reason the later version missed off Breakaway. A further thing in its favour is that it comes in a jewel case.

Great CD Very comprehensive

I joined a local "rock n pop" choir, two of the songs we were learning were In My Room and Help Me Rhonda - my old copies of Beach Boys were just that - old - so when I saw this collection, I got it. What joy! What singalong pleasure! What a great buy! About every song they ever released, and what I notice is that the actual lyrics seem much clearer than on the old vinyl or even old cd.The Beach Boys were incredibly influential, the lyrics and harmonies absolutely exemplify the culture in which they were produced - I read a lot of classic American literature (Revolutionary Road, Roth, Franzen, Salinger etc) and these songs were the soundtrack to postwar USA. Back in the day, here in the cold "old" UK I would listen to Beach Boys and dream/imagine surfing and driving along a seaboard in a Little Deuce Coup. Salinger's Catcher in the Rye makes a whole lot more sense if you listen to the lyrics of Be True To Your School. And how about this for a line: "And she had fun fun fun till her daddy took her T-Bird away" !!Great stuff!

I've always enjoyed the BB;s,such wonderful harmonies,redolent of California,although possibly a California that exists only in my mind,but they conjure such images...and here we have a good overview of their work,at a decent price.It;s a glum,gloomy British day,but put this on,and the sun breaks through,figuratively,if not literally,and we can hear possibly the very best vocal harmonies ever set down by a modern group,a good selection from the album that inspired Sgt Pepper,along with other hits,and album tracks.A perfect compilation? Is there such a thing?I doubt it,but it comes close.One final point,it's HDCD,if your player supports that.Mine does,so I have no complaints regarding the sound,although there's a comment criticising it.It's as good as any I've heard,and age has not made a scrap of difference to it.It could be recorded yesterday,in my opinion.
