Q: Will they work on exterior pergola? They would be outside and exposed year round in the upper midwest.

These brackets are called “shelf brackets” for a reason: They are designed, built, and intended for relatively small projects, not major construction, such as pergolas. They are very strong for their size, so you might get away with using them on both sides of the top layer of on-edge beams. But if you do, invest in longer screws. The pounding those beams take in a midwest snow storm or the high summer winds of recent years could eventually pull the screws supplied with the brackets right out of the treated lumber. Good luck with your project. I hope you enjoy the process as well as the final product.

Q: Do these brackets have to be installed with the L facing down or will they hold the same amount of weight with the L facing up?

For the first question, not have to be installed with L facing down. For the second question, if L facing up, it holds less weight compared with facing down. If you need to install with L facing up, we would suggest to use longer screws at places we pointed out in the vedio.

Very strong and look great

Stainless steel strong with what looks like a thick coating of white. It was the perfect size to reinforce my white vinyl fence. I bought stainless steel flathead #8 screws instead of using the #6 screws (not stainless steel) that came with the L brackets because I'm using them outdoors and wanted to avoid corrosion.

Solid and good value

Bought these to join aluminum posts on a screen room project. With this I got 10 brackets for just a bit more than the price for one bracket from the screen room post company. I used self tapping screws instead of the ones that came with the brackets so I didn't have to drill holes. These are sturdy and have a good finish.

I used these to stabilize and reinforce base of deck raining posts and they worked out well.

Well made little corner braces.

I really liked the overall workmanship. The edges are smooth and the uniform, with good quality powder coating paint. The screw holes are chamfered to accept the flat head screw provided.
