Zvezda500789033-1:72 Medieval Life Boat

The model consists of 23 parts with some nice surface detailing on the exterior of the hull and decking areas. The smaller parts (oars etc) are finely moulded and not overscale in appearance. There is a rigging diagram on the A5 size instruction sheet but rigging cord is not supplied with the kit (use some thread). The hull measures about 80mm stem to stern, so the model is quite small. No paints or glue are provided (I wouldn't expect them to be anyway). The three recommended Humbrol colours are matt white (34), matt black (33) and natural wood (110)

I like the kit, it’s all there and nicely detailed but 1/72?? I tried a 1/72 crew figure and he looks lost!

It is of course possible to substitute out real wood for some of the parts here on offer. It'd look great. Making a small sail from silk span or linen might come in useful for preparing to tackle a real larger scale wooden ship model if the hobby bites.This is quite a small model as you might expect as it is a lifeboat or proto-launch. Something you could expect to find on a Baltic Cog or Holk in the 14th Century for example, although a transomed hull might indicate more commonly seen 'late medieval' and beyond but unsure, specifically. One could easily modify it into a latin-sailed mediterranean (Amalfi, Genoa, Sardegna etc.) fishing/packet vessel using said silkspan and small diameter dowel.A very nice kit, arguably one of the most exquisitely detailed kits in this scale anywhere, although the model itself differs in a minor fashion from the box art. You could add extra inner hull 'ribs' to superdetail it, and that's my only criticism of this tiny gem- a bit bare inside.The attached image is from the public domain, builder unknown.

Das kleine "Medieval Life Boat" im Maßstab 1:72 besticht durch einen wunderbaren Guss, die Holzmaserung des kleinen Bootes ist wirklich sehr schön wiedergegeben. Darstellung und der Detailgrad der Bauteile bieten zudem eine wunderbare Möglichkeit das Boot nicht nur im Mittelalter (hierfür halte ich es eher deplatziert), sondern eher im 16.-18. Jahrhundert anzusiedeln, denn es wäre eine wirklich feine Bereicherung für eine englische Fregatte des 18. Jahrhunderts. Der beiliegende Bauplan ist quasi selbsterklärend und die Anzahl der Bauteile sehr überschaubar. Etwas fordernder könnte die Takelage des Beibootes werden, geübte Modellbauer sehen diesen Bausatz eh als sehr gute Basis was Tolles daraus zu bauen und zu bemalen - 5 Sterne.

Lots of detail, no mold lines, and exactly as advertised. Instructions are clear and easy to follow. The rigging for the model is well diagrammed. It would make a great first ship model to see if you enjoy the challenges of modeling a ship with rigging..
