Product Description Tom Hanks and Geena Davis star in this big-league comedy based on the real-life exploits of the All-American Girls Baseball League. desertcart.com Penny Marshall's popular 1992 comedy sheds light on a little-known chapter of American sports history with its story of a struggling team in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. The league was formed when the recruiting of soldiers during World War II resulted in a shortage of men's baseball teams. The AAGPBL continued after the war (until 1954), and Marshall's movie depicts the league in full swing, beginning when a savvy baseball scout (Jon Lovitz) finds a pair of promising new players in small-town Oregonian sisters (Geena Davis, Lori Petty). The sisters are signed to play for the Rockford Peaches near Chicago, whose new manager (Tom Hanks) is a former home-run king who wrecked his career with alcoholism. They're all a bunch of underdogs, and Marshall (with a witty script by Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel) does a fine job of establishing a colorful team of supporting players including Madonna and (in her movie debut) Rosie O'Donnell. It's a conventional Hollywood sports story (Marshall's never been one to take dramatic risks), but the stellar cast is delightful, and the movie's filled with memorable moments, witty dialogue, and agreeable sentiment. And just remember: there's no crying in baseball! --Jeff Shannon Review: One of my favorite movies! - Love this movie so much! Tom Hanks is great, and really love the strong female characters! Heartwarming, Funny, and Unforgettable
A League of Their Own is an absolute classic — a perfect blend of humor, heart, and history. Set during World War II, it tells the inspiring story of the women who stepped up to play professional baseball while the men were off at war. The cast is phenomenal: Geena Davis is effortlessly strong and graceful, Tom Hanks is hilarious and surprisingly touching, and the entire ensemble brings real personality and depth to their roles. The film manages to be both entertaining and meaningful, celebrating the power of teamwork, perseverance, and breaking barriers. It’s packed with memorable moments, iconic lines (“There’s no crying in baseball!”), and a whole lot of heart. Whether you’re a sports fan or not, A League of Their Own is a feel-good film that stands the test of time.

highly fictionalized film of USA's first professional women's baseball league
Dottie Hanson, played by actress Geena Davis, is pretty but married, and also empathetic and smart. To help her younger sister realize her dreams for a life beyond the farm, the pair accepts the New York recruiter’s invitation (played by Jon Lovitz) to attend the tryouts for the fledgling All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (it should be noted that Dottie would have been considered a ‘woman’ in this time period because she is married, whereas single women were referred to as ‘girls’). The recruiter signed over a hundred of baseball and softball’s finest from Canada and the USA to the tryouts in Chicago. Once the team is selected and a team manager is hired – Jimmy Dugan, played by Tom Hanks, the film becomes less nostalgia and increasingly comedic. Dugan is a washed-up home run hitter and alcoholic who aimlessly spits tobacco and struck out in life with two failed marriages. He is also initially against women playing baseball, although the grit and heart of his players slowly erodes his unfounded bias. Dugan’s baseball past continues to attract fans for his autograph, which his employers recognize is profitable. Memorable teammates played by actresses Lori Petty, Madonna, and Rosie O’Donnell provide a comedy cast of hilarious on-the-field and off-the-field antics as the ‘girls’ blaze a trail to the World Series in this highly fictionalized film loosely based on a true story. The film concludes with Dottie choosing to return to her married life in Oregon after one memorable season and her sister staying in Racine, Wisconsin with her new team, while Dugan stays manager of his team. Although touted as a comedy, compared to Major League, a 1989 film starring Tom Beringer, Charlie Sheen, and Corbin Bernsen, this film was slow-moving and seldom hilarious. In short, I found it predictable and a bit of a grind to watch. Nonetheless, there were some touching scenes from the several back stories, especially the father/daughter relationship and sibling rivalry. The Library of Congress liked the film much more than me, calling it "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant", according to a reference (no. 3) at Wikipedia.org . The film’s scriptwriters seemed cognizant of sociology’s hegemony theory, going so far as changing the actual Mr. Wrigley into a fictional character – Walter Harvey of Harvey Bars. This movie likely staved off any potential lawsuits for defamation of character.

Truly, since I was a kid in 1992 this is still one my favourite feel good movies. Mixing in a bit of little known history, about the Woman's Baseball League that ran from 1943-1954, and adding in an engaging storyline with fun, warm characters well played by the cast (even Madonna is good in this one!) it's completely entertaining from the start right up to the great finale. A good extras package as well, as there's a commentary with cast and crew, 37 minutes of (often substantial) deleted scenes with intro by director Penny Marshall, a 52 minute nine part making of and a 12 minute reunion featurettes alongside the Madonna 'Playground' video. Great stuff!

Eine lustige aber auch traurige Geschichte über Sport im 2. Weltkrieg. Frauen spielen Baseball solange die Männer im Krieg sind. Tom Hanks, Geena Davis und Madonna sind einfach herrlich.
