Two ways to ruin the mill: (a) putting salt corns in the pepper mill, (b) touching either mill with wet hands.
I love these! I have two more, one for salt, and one for pepper that I put salt into and ruined it! :-) I still use it decoratively though. And here comes my BIG, BIG warning: If you buy the pepper one, as this mill is, DO NOT, I repeat, do not put salt corns in it! The interior is some type of metal, that will quickly corrode from the reaction of grinding salt! Warning, warning! Only put pepper corns in the pepper mill. For salt corns, you HAVE to buy the corresponding salt mill. Warning number 2: Do NOT hold the mill with wet or moist hands. The copper colour will come off, and it will look less pretty. I used the salt mill when cooking, so my hands were often wet from having washed my hand and not dried them, and the colour started to lose its luster and look matt and greyish. I still use it though, it just looks like distressed copper or something. But I wish I had known better from the beginning.

Works great on coarse hymilayan pink salt.
I almost didn't buy this because of the negative comments of corrosion. I have had this for years of dealy use by a four person family, in an arid mountain environment. This is vinyl lined so salt wont corrode the copper. The copper is solid and I don't see this being dented easily. It has a very nice green patina at the base from the salt oxidizing tye surface layer. It can be buffed to reveal solid copper. The copper is as thick as a penny. The crank is fastened with a nice sized bolt that wont strip. The coarseness of the grain is adjusted with a nice sized screw that wont strip. This is one of the best salt ginders I've seen, although I wish they would have used stainless steel instead of vinyl as a barrier between the salt and copper, only that would move the price bracket significantly. Vinyl is non reactive with salt and won't crack if the grinder drops. The actual grinding mechanism is tool steel against vinyl. All in all a great grinder, although I think their pepper grinders are more "perfect." Salt is simply more corrosive so there are cost restrictions on materials that can be used. I think they did a near perfect job for the price especially.Hope that helps.

Awesome Salt/Pepper Mills!
When I purchased this salt mill, I was a bit skeptical of the purchase because it's not often I run into a product that simply blows me away. In fact, it took me almost three weeks to decide if I wanted to buy this (and it's counterpart the brass pepper mill) simply because I wondered if I should get the larger 10" versions.Well, six months down the road, the copper color has darkened almost to a brown (grease/moisture) and it's lustre is gorgeous. It's so easy to crank out the grains and gives you and adjustable grind if you like a slightly larger grind. It has ceramic grind gears fitting precisely in the bottom portion and it's so easy to load more product into them. I just use a large funnel and pour.Honestly, if you are a epicurean such as I, definitely do NOT hesitate except to decide on which size is better for you. I've not looked back and I receive comments on how nice, and how different from other varieties of mills they are. The detail work in the metal on the mills sides is gorgeous. For me, there's no doubt, that these mills take the cake. Buy them. You won't regret it and just seeing them stand so proudly on your table/range-side/wherever will give you such a sense of joy.

So disappointing
I read great reviews. This pepper mill barely grinds the pepper. The nut on the top does not screw on very well and loosens every time you try to grind pepper. I was hoping for durability as it was made from metal, but the grinding mechanism is plastic. So very disappointed especially after paying $50. I had to convince my husband this was worth the expense. I’m sad to admit, I was wrong. I’m still wishing for the perfect pepper grinder, as I love Freshly ground black pepper. My search continues. I wish I could return or replace, but we are out of the return window.

Awesome!!
The reason for the 4 star rating...It's a little cumbersome to hold on to the mill and turn the handle but its workable I just go to the base of the handle and turn their the nut does loosen with use but a quick turn of the nut and it's tightened up. The pros...it puts out a good amount of salt that is finally ground and it looks absolutely gorgeous in my kitchen. I have the salt and pepper mill.

Gorgeous salt grinder and grinds my Himalayan sea salt with ease
I purchased this for grinding Himalayan pink salt. These are lined, so the salt doesn't corrode the copper. The fill line, I go by is at the metal separator inside (about 1/4 -1/3 from the top); to ensure the salt doesn't hit the copper cap. It grinds coarse Himalayan sea salt with ease. I wouldn't recommend using a wet sea salt like French Grey though...I'd be afraid of chancing corrosion. --I'll more than likely get another set without copper for my French Grey sea salt. This grinder is gorgeous and partners the matching pepper grinder beautifully. I love them. The Greeks did very well , and I can see why they have a great reputation with their grinders. Highly recommended.

Nut holding handle loosens quite easily
I am not sure whether the construction of this mill is different due to the fact it is supposed to grind salt, but I find it of less quality than the Atlas pepper mill I purchased one year ago. The grinding mechanism is nylon and the copper body is thin with a plastic insert that holds the salt. This may be necessary to help minimize salt corrosion, but it is definitely not solid metal construction like the pepper mill. It grinds salt well. Only time will tell if it's construction is sound.

Almost perfect
Bought em as a gift. She loves them, but the handle at the top is a bit lose and you have to tighten the top piece or it falls of when you're using it.I just wish that component was a bit of a tighter fit, but overall she was very happy
