Kensuke's Kingdom

This book first came to my attention when I was in the cinema and saw the film adaptation being advertised and as well as thinking that the movie looked good I thought the book sounded like a good one to read. When I heard that Michael Morpurgo was the author I was sold on it as I knew he was a great author and had read The Butterfly Lion when I was at school. I'm glad I gave this a go as I really enjoyed it and found myself glued to it! I also found it to be very emotional but it was an excellent story and one well worth reading! I'd recommend this to anyone (no matter what age) to read this if they haven't yet done so.

Kensuke's Kingdom by Michael Morpurgo. Kensuke's Kingdom is an amazing book, full of adventure, fear and all different emotions that you will experience when reading. When Michael and his family decide to set off on an adventure to sail around the world it starts off brilliantly. But after their curious dog, Stella Artois falls off the boat a couple of times, it all goes downhill. Michael suddenly ends up washed up on a desert island with Stella. But he is not alone. Could he be in Kensuke's Kingdom? The book is an adventure story that kids will love. I recommend this book for 9-15 year olds. 6 out of 6 children from Braehead Primary School have loved reading it and gave it a score of 9/10. It is a fantastic book overall and I thoroughly recommend it. Look out for the best bits where Kensuke and Michael start to bond, it made me really want to read on. Primary 7 Pupil.

Michael's parents were made redundant and his Dad decided to sell their car and house and buy a boat instead. Michael left his friends behind and travelled the world on the boat with his parents and their dog Stella. One night there was a huge storm and Michael and Stella fell into the water and he was stung by a jellyfish and hurt. Michael and Stella washed up on an island. One man called Kensuke lived there. Kensuke used to a doctor then went to war. When an atomic bomb dropped on his home in Japan and his wife and child was killed he decided to live by himself on the island. Kensuke looked after Michael until he was well enough to wake up. Kensuke and Michael learnt a lot from each other and spent time painting, fishing and looking after the animals on the island. Michael's parents think that him and Stella have died, they search for them and one day find them. I thought that Kensuke would get on the boat with them but he didn't. I thought the book was very interesting, I liked hearing about the animals and to imagine what life on an island would be like. The main characters in the book are Michael, Michael's Mum and Dad, Kensuke and Stella the dog. Stella the dog was my favourite. She was very loyal to Michael and also loved Kensuke. I love dogs too. I enjoyed reading the book. My favourite was when Michael was reunited with his parents, it was a very happy moment in the book for the whole family but I felt sad that Kensuke chose to stay behind. I think there is a chance his wife and child are still alive. I didn't like it when the killer men came to the island and killed the two mother gibbons. It was very frightening and tragic. I would recommend this book to my friends and family. There is a lot of drama and the writing is very descriptive so it allows you to imagine what the characters are going through.

This book is really good It is a bit tragic but it has a happy ending It is set after the WW2

I am well into my forties and only just got around to reading this. What a superb story this is. The characters and relationships develop so well over so few chapters. I can't say much as I do not want to spoil it. Such a beautiful ending. Just a brilliant story that is full of optimism, hope and what family can mean and be. Beautiful. Highly recommended!

top book

We read this book to a 7 & 9 year old as a bedtime story over a period of a few weeks. The adults and children alike were captivated by this story from the beginning. Their may be adventure, animals and friendship but also great lessons. I highly recommend this book and encourage the family to read it together. It will be a book we all remember.

Love this author. Every child should have the chance to read his excellent novels.

Wieder ein tolles Michael Morpurgo Buch.

Kids love it

A brilliant read with a very compelling opening page! Its easy to read with highly relatable characters and realistic in its telling. I have read of several who got 'left behimnd' at the end of the war. I wont give and spiolers, but while kind of predictable, its still a great reead. I love novels based in a real historic context.
