Product Description Drama following the life of the legendary 'Man in Black', Johnny Cash. The movie begins in 1955, when a tough, skinny guitar-slinger who called himself J.R. Cash (Joaquin Phoenix) walks into the soon-to-be-famous Sun Studios in Memphis. It was a moment that would have an indelible effect on American culture. With his driving freight-train chords, steel-eyed intensity and a voice as deep and black as night, Cash sang blistering songs of heartache and survival that were gutsy, full of real life and unlike anything heard before. That day kicked off the electrifying early career of Johnny Cash. As he pioneered a fiercely original sound that blazed a trail for rock, country, punk, folk and rap stars to come, Cash began a rough-and-tumble journey of personal transformation. In the most volatile period of his life, he evolved from a self-destructive pop star into the iconic 'Man in Black' - facing down his demons, fighting for the love that would save him time and again, and learning how to walk the razor-thin line between destruction and redemption. Reese Witherspoon won a Best Actress Academy Award for her role as June Carter, Cash's long-suffering wife. desertcart.co.uk Review Charting the life stories of both legendary musician Johnny Cash and singer June Carter, Walk The Line has proven to be among the most popular music biopics of all time. And with good reason. Spearheaded by two superb performances (which well come to shortly), the films main focus is on Cash himself, from his childhood, early successes, eventual troubles through to the legendary concert of Folsom Prison. His journey also takes in drug problems, the tragedy that haunted him and bumpy relationships with the women in his life. Throughout, of course, theres Cashs enviable body of musical work, which not only helps provide markers for his story, but makes for an excellent soundtrack to the movie as a whole. As a film, Walk The Line is resolutely formulaic, with a structure thatll be familiar to anyone who regularly watches biopics of this ilk. What really helps this one stand tall though are Joaquin Pheonix and Reese Witherspoon. Pheonix is utterly compelling in the lead role, while Witherspoon is back on the form she displayed back in the days of Election. James Mangolds direction is fine and uncluttered, and while his film clearly chooses which elements of Cashs life to focus on (theres certainly far more to know than you get in the two and a quarter hours here), it works extremely well as an entry point into the life story of a great musician. Even the casual viewer will get a lot from Walk The Line, and it may even compel them to expand their CD collection off the back of it,--Simon Brew Review: One of the best films in a while - There's not a lot to say that hasn't already been said here! I knew very little about Cash besides the fact that he died not long ago and a friend is a huge fan of his music. However I was interested enough to want to see the movie and intrigued to see Reese W live out her childhood dream of being a country singer. Wow. It's a long movie but I hardly noticed. Some really truly great acting from both leads - a magnificent supporting cast. A compelling, dramatic, and moving story of redemption. Of necessity the film focuses on a relatively short period of Cash and Carter's life and the genesis of their relationship, but it whets the appetite to find out more about the man and his music. I think it actually works a good deal better than if they had tried to fit his whole life in - it's a snapshot, which has enabled the filmmakers to really get into the story, not skim over things too much. Witherspoon and Phoenix both put in quite amazing vocal performances. Phoenix in particular beautifully portrays Johnny's journey from wannabe gospel singer nervously trying out his own song for a producer right up to the confident rock star with the inmates of Folsom putty in his hands. Acting, singing and playing wise both actors give it their all, and the supporting actors who learned to sing and singers who learned to act all come out smelling of roses. Some beautiful and some incredibly powerful scenes - those where June and her family walk Cash through withdrawal from drugs fitting neatly into both those categories and being some of my favourite parts of the film. One also mustn't forget the two young actors playing young JR and his brother, who really set up the film incredibly well - the opening scenes leading up to the death of his brother show that these two young actors are serious talent of the future and they do a beautiful job making real the close friendship that haunts the adult Cash throughout the rest of the film. I could seriously waffle on for ages, I have been so impressed by this movie. What can I say? It's a triumph. Do watch the deleted scenes and also the interesting and informative commentary (which gives the background to some scenes in the movie which in many cases you may otherwise think must have been elaborated on or made up). I am looking forward to getting my hands on the double disc set and seeing the rest of the extras. Buy this movie, or at least, rent this movie, you won't regret it. It's a keeper and one I am certain I shall watch many times more. And... a new addition to my all time favourite quotes: Record Company Executive: Your fans are church folk, Johnny. Christians. They don't wanna hear you singing to a bunch of murderers and rapists, tryin' to cheer 'em up. Johnny Cash: [pause] Well, they're not Christians, then. Review: Brilliant - Top film.

Reese Deserved Her Oscar
I had never heard of Johnny Cash before I watched this film and initially I was only drawn to it because of Reese Witherspoon. Due to this everything in the film was fresh and exciting, a real breath of fresh air after the slightly over-hyped 'Brokeback Mountain'. All the performances are up to Oscar standard and the tormented star crossed lovers are played to perfection by the leads. What impressed me even more was that they also did their own singing, after months of preparation for their roles. The music was another highlight of the film educating me in the genius that is Johnny Cash (the soundtrack was speedily bought after I saw the film which is also great). The film follows Johnny's life from his childhood with the father from hell up to his marriage to June Carter, the true love of his life. Phoenix's portrayal of a drug dependant Cash was phenomenal and surely deserved an award (but alas). Reese Witherspoon fully deserved her accolade too, proving to the world she can truly act (after career blunders such as 'Sweet Home Alabama'). Great performances. Great narrative. Great music. Great film!

Walk The Line DVD
This DVD is a welcome addition to our ever expanding collection. It tells the story of Johnny Cash from his childhood right through to him becoming a household name, with lots of twists and turns in between. Phoenix and Witherspoon are wonderfully cast as Cash and Carter and the soundtracks are executed brilliantly by both. I'm not a Country & Western fanatic, but the story is biographical and very interesting. Our 16yr old daughter loves this movie (which probably isn't cool!) and this DVD has been lent out to numerous neighbours, friends and family members - all whom have enjoyed it immensely. If you have failed to catch this movie for one reason or another, or like me gave it a miss because I am not interested in Country & Western, do yourself a favour and settle down on the settee with family or friends and be prepared to have an enjoyable and educational couple of hours.

A very heart-touching story. Excellent actors in an excellent movie.
I am not a person that remembers actors' faces, but Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon will remain engraved in my memory for their excellent performance in this movie. I am a Johnny Cash fan and I really think they couldn't have found a better actor for his part. I get easily bored by the telly, and I usually do some work on my laptop while watchig a film. Now, >>this film<< I watched with interest from beginning to end. And then - I went on watching the extra features (the 10 deleted scenes with commentary). There is a negative review that criticizes that the story was far from Johnny Cash's real life. Well? It's still a great movie! Totally worth your time.

The influential and classic music of Johnny cash, his troubled life and the love story of him and June Carter (probably the greatest of the last century) are such tricky subjects to adapt on screen and when I say tricky, I mean so tricky that the only two things that are possible after it's completion is either a huge fail or a classic. The amazing, direction, writing and the breathtaking performances here by Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon ensure that a classic is what we get. Joaquin Phoenix totally stuns you by making it impossible to tell between him and Cash. It's not just a portrayal he did, he became Johnny Cash. It comes as something of a surprise that he didn't receive and major awards as 'Best Actor' that year. Reese Witherspoon surely doesn't come up to Phoenix's level and remains somehow overshadowed by his comparatively much more powerful performance, but expecting any better from her won't be right because June Carter (or any other person ever to live) naturally wasn't as complex a person as Cash and with Phoenix portraying all the complexities perfectly, there wasn't much left for her and it's safe to say that it was well worth her 'Best Actress' Oscar. All in all, I cannot think of a better way to honor Cash's genius.
