Amazing
I have read a lot of books which cover this time in history and have read this book many times so when I saw it was available in hardcover I was really pleased. It is both a sad and hopeful story and is beautifully written. One of the things which makes it unique is the fact that it reads as if it had been written only a few years ago.

a very enjoyable read.
As described arrived on time, it is a big long book and will take me some time to get through, but my first impressions are good a very enjoyable read. One point it is a long book and I got the hard back at 21x13x6 cm I would have gone for the paperback as holding this on a train is tiresome.

Beware of textual errors in the Everyman edition!
I give the Tale of Genji itself five stars but this review is a warning about textual errors in the Everyman's Library edition of 1992. I found three in the first 50 pages or so. They are not in the Penguin 1981 edition of the same translation. The worst was a sentence that made no sense because a complete line of text in the Penguin edition (from the middle of one line to the middle of the next) had been dropped from Everyman.

A great piece of literature. Give it a try
Brace yourself for a Loooooooonnnnnnng book, not always easy to follow for western readers but when you're done you get a sense of achievement and you will want to read it again... yes despite the 1300+ pages.

Beautifully written, atmospheric
This is not a book filled with action scenes, but its theme of loss and trying to find something, is both very powerful in its own right and quite well transferred onto the pages. It is also quite easy and sort of 'natural' to come to terms with the main protagonist's motives and cheer him success along the way.

Bought this as a present; the recipient loved it. He recommends everyone to read it.It's a long book, so best to have in this hardback version.
