The Rise: Book 1 (The Originals)

Normally I'm very picky about books and it takes a lot for me to get lost in one, but I swallowed this book in less than a week. It's a must read if you're a fan of The Originals, but it's an interesting read if you don't know the characters beforehand either, I imagine.The tv-show "The Originals" is about the Mikaelsons coming back to New Orleans, after almost a century, a city they help build and the place they felt most at home. "The Rise" is the first book telling the story of what happened when the Mikaelson siblings first arrived in the settlement of New Orleans, in 1713/1722, after spending 700 years in Europe. When they first arrive, witches and werewolves reign and does not welcome them. The novel tells about their struggles to settle down, for their rights to be there as well. It's a really good background read, which gives us a good insight for especially Rebekah and Klaus and each their somewhat strained relation to love and relationships. It has a lot of new interesting characters, which I personally hope to see at some point in the continued series.One of the many things I love about Klaus is his confidence, coockyness and ruthlessness and despite seeing a new side of him in this first book, Julie still manages to keep him the way we like him as well :) Same goes for Rebekah and Elijah - in my opinion, they have been kept true to thier character, only with another layer. Especially in Klaus' case. One of the things I enjoyed about it, was that I was able to recognize the loved characters from the show, in between the pages, which on several occasions made me smile.It's an easy read. English is not my first language, but I had no problem understanding and following the plot.

I think a little effort to write in a manner consistent with the period would have gone a long way but unfortunately for me reading very obvious contemporary colloquialisms and attitudes in a historical setting is an intolerable annoyance. If you don't mind that however the story isn't bad, it's believable for The Originals as we know them on television.If you're someone who has read books written at around the same time this story is set (300 years ago) or even more recent classics and you particularly enjoy the style and language of these books then I don't recommend this for you. If however you're not too bothered about that sort of thing (and there's nothing wrong with that) but you're a big fan of The Originals TV show then I would recommend this book.

Os irmãos Mikaelsons tem meu coração. Livro simplesmente incrível, pra alguém que ja assistiu a série e ama super recomendo. Sem defeitos, ansiosa estou para ler o próximo livro. Mostra trechos que não foram retratados na série, o que torna mais interessante ainda. Sem contar o material do livro que adorei e essa capa NOSSA morroooo!!!! Poderia escrever uma redação do quanto AMEI e achei PERFEITO mas a Lumena não autorizou. Enfim após ler esse livro adorável vai ser dificil superar, daqui um tempo leio tudo de novo. E é sobre isso...
