Portrait Drawing

There are a lot of drawing books out there, especially ones dealing with portraiture – some more useful than others – this is one of the useful ones.Very well-illustrated with good (but not flashy) drawing examples, this takes the student through the basics and provides useful tips on technique (good advice on shading) dealing with all the structural elements of portraiture.It's a quite refreshing book to encounter after some of the (mainly American) books that promise a lot, but often fall down on proper instruction or favour a “method” that reduces everything to a process of systematic design.A worthwhile addition to any aspiring art student's library; even practising artists can pick up helpful pointers from books such as this.Use the "Look inside" feature above for an idea of the contents.

A wonderful book from an extraordinary teacher for those who do not just want to make a pretty portrait but a good portrait. I recommend to sign up for the author's (online) drawing course at West Dean College UK to fully understand his concept.

Lucidly written where it needs to explain rather than show; but for the most part it shows you just what you need to do. You can get a likeness within twenty minutes by following the precepts in this wonderful book.

Found this book really useful. The write describes some very useful tips which i use to draw portraits. I was a beginner and am now confident in drawing portraits after using this book. Definitely recommended.
