Works good so far
Volume knob was a bit counterintuitive but works. Tested network terminations and toned cable. Works good so far. I like that it comes with an alligator clip wire set. Will be making a bnc wire set for analog camera lines

Sooner or later you will want one!
The media could not be loaded. This is a GREAT product.Very simple to use and very useful! This cable tester can test both traditional (not VOIP) telephone cables as well as ethernet cables.I only tested the Ethernet functionality as I no longer have a land line. There are TWO main ethernet cable testing functions:1) Testing that a cable is good2) Finding a cable in a patch panel or a busy ethernet hub.To test if an ethernet cable is functional (no broken or short-circuited lines) you follow these simple steps:- Plug one end of your cable in the ethernet jack on your base tester.- Plug the other end in the base of the testing probe.- Turn the knob to the position "Network"- And finally, press the "TEST" button. You will see the LED synchronously light up the numbers 1 to "G", identifying the wire currently being tested.- Look to ensure that the same LED lights up at the same time on both the base unit and the probe- Look to ensure that you never have TWO LEDs lit at the same time on either the base or the probe (which would indicate a short circuit in the cable). To SCAN for a particular in your ethernet switch (or hub or patch panel):1) Connect the far end of the cable you want to identify into the back of your base unit.2) Turn the knob to the position "SCAN"3) Go to your patch panel / switch4) press the on/off button on your probe to turn it on5) you can press the "light icon" to turn on the helpful LED illumination of the probe's tip if your panel is in a dark spot6) Turn the volume up on the rotary knob7) you can optionally use the included earbud if you need to test in a quiet environment8) press and hold the "scan" button on the probe and touch the connector of each of the ethernet cables in your switch ports until you hear one that "beeps".And that's it! Simple and effective! The meter comes with a short ethernet patch cable (in case you need it in your particular setup) and a RJ-45 to aligator clips (for some phone testing scenarios). The package include two 9V batteries and a complete but a bit confusing instruction leaflet. The PROS:- The tester is SIMPLE to use and effective- It is affordable so even a DYI person at home can afford it.- It has nice helpful features like the LED light on the probe and nice little extras like the included earbuds. The CONS:- I would have liked to have a tool pouch to store that tester between uses.- Since I use it at home and as such, infrequently, I would have loved the ability to easily remove the batteries when not in use. Unfortunately, the battery compartment is screwed shut. So I will have to leave the batteries in the devices and cross my fingers that the battery won't leak and ruin my tester :-(The VERDICT:Highly recommended!

excellent phone & ethernet cable tester
As a business owner who is responsible for my own IT infrastructure, I've had the displeasure of installing and troubleshooting my sore excuse of an ethernet network. Over the years, as new equipment came online, I had to add more and more cables from cat5 to 6, 7, and now cat8. As old devices got retired and new equipment place online, my network became less reliable and throughput suffers. Problems from rats chewing the cables to interferences from fluorescent lighting wreak havoc on my limited diagnosing skills. Another problem is in identifying which cable connect which device. Labels simply fade or fall off over time.Having this cable tester may not fix the problem but at least it saves a lot of time helping me pinpoint the source of the issue. I can put the transmitter on one end of the cable in question and use the receiver on the other end to find which of the 30 cable ends is the culprit. I can also test that the cable is terminated correctly before wasting time running it across the ceiling to its destination. It's a nice touch to include a set of earbuds so you can get audio as well as visual signal feedback. The only thing I wish for is a carrying case so that I don't lose the lead wires & clips.
