Could be better
Plenty of detail for beginners to learn. If I ever get around to following everything in the book, I will probably feel quite competent. The author obviously knows his stuff but he is not the best of writers. The explanations are there but some could be expressed more clearly. I had to re-read some sections several times to understand exactly what he meant. Maybe he is assuming a degree of knowledge that I do not have. Related to that, the drawings are not always perfectly clear. For perspective, I am pretty mechanically minded, happy to strip an engine to its basic components and re-build it. There is not much I cannot turn my hand to. I spent 50 years in the construction industry where technical drawings were an every-day part of my work and I never had any problem understanding them. So, when I say that the drawings in the book are not always easy to follow - you can believe it.

Not fit for purpose 50 years old ...slapped on colour covers
Plesse do not waste your money on these books. No college course would use them for students. They have no health and safety guidence upto modern day levels... use 50year old out dated machines /tools... you could easy loose fingers foolwing these book series instructions. The text is so out dated and dreadful black and white photos....be warned there are modern books 21st century in colour with health safety advice.. i have asked books sellers to stop selling this series...its a scamm.my opinion these books should be recycled binned..not fit for purpose..

projects to improve your use of the lathe
excellent, each chapter introduced a technique with a tool build project to demonstrate. I liked the advice on achieving a good finish, a topic often ignored. an great book for someone looking to get really rather proficient as a lathe user, somewhat better than Spary book

Not good for the beginner
I would have to agree with some other reviews that this book is not for the beginner. Having just acquired a Myford Super 7, I was hoping for somthing to help me get to grips with the basics. This book starts out using terminology which is undefined and gets increasingly complicated. The project based idea is a good one, it's just a pity the introduction doesn't start with the basics. "The Amateur's Lathe" by Sparey is much better.

Great for beginners.
Great for beginners, with a few projects to help you along. You do need to have some idea of reading a drawing.

Not the best for a beginner.
Pictures are not very clear and the projects are not very interesting. Very technical projects that assume some knowledge.
