The best book I have ever read!
Remarkably Bright Creatures - What a book. This is easily the best book I have ever read. From the in-depth characters, the authors style of writing and the knowledge put into this book. It was perfect. The characters in this book where phenomenal. Each with their own unique personality and background story that enabled us as a reader to picture them and their stories perfectly. The book highlights some really interesting concepts, in that we often make our choices which lead to us harming ourselves, leading to conclusions when we don’t know the full picture. This book really made me think outside “the box” so to speak. The octopus- where do I start. If someone had told me I’d fall in love with an idea and personality of an octopus I would think they were mad. But honestly, the character of Marcellus was just beautiful. The relationships as they develop through the book had me welling up in several parts, and watching their stories unfold perfectly with all the pieces in the puzzle coming together was a masterpiece in itself. This was honestly one of the most heart warming- beautifully written books I’ve ever read. The easiest 5⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I’ve ever given to a book.

such a lovely read
I genuinely liked it all. Marcellus .. What a great hero. A very easy read, a good heartfelt story, no nastiness, a bit of sadness but plenty of joy.

Beautiful book
Loved all the characters and the slow burn of their individual journeys. The subject matter of loss and finding was beautifully told in an emotional but funny way. A highly recommended read

Observably Bright Features
This is a charming, innovative and well-plotted tale which, for me at least, did just enough to keep me engaged through to the final heartwarming – if rather predictable – denouement. The central characters, the abandoned Cameron and the widowed Tova, have been affectionately constructed and, despite occasional idiosyncrasies, their actions are believable while, simultaneously, they drive a moderately intricate plot forward in an occasionally humorous and often original fashion. It is hard not to like both of them. And then there is the octopus, Marcellus – a less conventional protagonist whose logical, measured soliloquies genuinely add a dimension, albeit a slightly surreal one, to the novel. These three and a plausible supporting cast of family, friends and work colleagues come together pretty seamlessly to sketch the main themes of grief, loss and of opportunities not taken in an engaging and sympathetic fashion. While the book isn’t likely to move many readers to tears, its thoughtful, wry commentary on the values which really matter to people may well give pause for thought. All that said, I finished with a couple of reservations.First, Cameron’s visit to Simon Binks in Seattle felt out of kilter compared with the rest of the novel. The encounter was, I suppose, necessary for the plot to function but, while perhaps deliberate on the author’s part, the disjointed and slightly stilted nature of its telling struck a bum note for me.Second, despite its evident strengths, the whole novel does feel like the product of a west coast writing group or workshop, an impression emphasised by the presence of a dozen or so “Reading Group Discussion Questions” at the end of the book. As such, one always feels that the plot has been carefully (over?) crafted to deliver the right events in the right order and a sudden swerve towards an unrecoverable catastrophe would have been a real surprise. That is not to say that there isn’t a good deal of emotive writing in the book – there is – but gut-wrenching pathos and tragedy is absent; “A Farewell to Arms” it’s not!At any rate, before I read it myself, I bought this as a Christmas present for a marine biologist niece who is trying to finish a PhD on seal lice; she hasn’t told me yet but I think that she will have enjoyed it.

Quietly beautiful
This took a while to grow on me because the the threads of the story were so delicate and ordinary at first. It’s not a fast paced thriller or a book with a huge plot but it’s full of emotion which creeps up on you - I cried several times. The different POVs are authentic and beautifully written. It’s not really my usual sort of book but I’m glad I read it.

Delightful and unexpected
Third book is so uplifting and kept me turning the pages. I loved hearing from Marcellus himself and the characters are so relatable. I'm sure I'll read it again.
