It comes with a cushioned V-Notch type support. There is no need for anything else. However, you can remove it and mount a camera onto the thread so it is very versatile.

Q: What's difference between gen2and gen and short

Don't own the short, but I think the difference is the height when used as tripod. You can get to sitting position with full length but the legs spread out quite far. So I assume the short one takes up less room
