![The Great Escape [Blu-ray] [1963]](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/81xoKwMxSmL.jpg)

Product Description In 1943, the Germans opened Stalag Luft III, a maximum-security prisoner-of-war camp designed to hold even the craftiest escape artists. In doing so, however, the Nazis unwittingly assembled the finest escape team in military history--brilliantly portrayed here by Steve McQueen, James Garner, Charles Bronson and James Coburn--who worked on what became the largest prison breakout ever attempted. One of the most ingenious and suspenseful adventure films of all time, The Great Escape is a masterful collaboration between director John Sturges (The Magnificent Seven), screenwriters James Clavell (Shogun) and W.R. Burnett (Little Caesar), and composer Elmer Bernstein. Based on a true story, The Great Escape is epic entertainment that “captivates, thrills and stirs” (Variety). desertcart.co.uk Review Rightly revered as an all-time war movie classic, The Great Escape finally gets a long overdue Blu-ray upgrade. And it proves to be worth the wait. The film itself is a regularly-rewatched classic, although the version that gets played almost on loop on television never looks this good. Based on a true story, it tells the story of a group of prisoners of war, who plan an ambitious breakout from a Nazi prison camp in the midst of World War II. It's a long, patient, gripping piece of cinema, expertly directed by John Sturges. And what really, really lifts it further is one of the best ensemble casts in the history of film. Where else would you find Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson, James Coburn and James Garner alongside the likes of Richard Attenborough? Furthermore, it's one of McQueen's most iconic performances, and considering the rest of his CV, that's no small feat. The Blu-ray works hard to pull the most out of the picture quality, and while the 1080p transfer isn't reference quality, it's still very good. Furthermore, Elmer Bernstein's classic score has rarely sounded better. Backed up by an interesting package of extra features, The Great Escape Blu-ray is a fittingly strong disc for an excellent piece of cinema. --Jon Foster Review: great escape, great film. - I was actually around in '63 when the film was first at the pictures. Years later I bought the film on video thinking wow its great to watch it on tv.Forward on a few years. Then it comes out on dvd and wow again what a good invention and clear picture.I thought it is the best I've seen. Then out of the blue(blu) came a ray of madness. Bluray had arrived and they had put Great Escape on disc. I love this version the best not only for brilliant picture and sound but noticing things that you never saw before (ie. the german flag on top of the camp, the blades of grass, the colour and everything). I'll stop waffling now and just say thanks for making my life better for the of The Great Escape on Bluray. PS.Buy this film. PPS Buy another for Mother in Law.(I think not) thanks Eric Review: Great escape - All time classic 👌

THE GREAT ESCAPE HAS TO BE THE GREATEST ENTERTAINING WORLD WAR II FILM OF THEM ALL.. WELL WORTH WATCHING !
THE GREAT ESCAPE is probably the best World War II Prisoner of War Camp + film that I and no doubt endless others have ever seen. It is quite a long film, but well worth seeing it from beginning to end. It is a brilliant and very gripping film, with a cast of the best actors ( both British, American and others ). Amazing scenes, and among them the best and most well known of all , of Steve McQueen on a motorcycle he captured from the Germans and giving them a chase of their lives, but only to be finally captured tangled in barbed wire.

Best war film ever made!
Always wanted a copy of this on blu-ray. It isn't perfect but makes viewing an old film much clearer. The criticisms levelled about no extras are undeserved. Bizarrely they are in the titles/popup menu rather than disc menu. Not sure why, but they are there and worth watching. Classic film, great story, great acting - love it! Worth every penny! :)

And yet another of my favourite war movies
Although a little Hollywoodised if that is a word, the story is very good, sometimes the acting is a little over the top. The strange thing is that the two main stars McQueen and Garner although played two important parts and were billed above Attenborough they never actually played a part in the digging of the tunnels, Garner supplying the escape items he had scrounged and McQueen getting the information on the surrounding countryside for the escape. Also no Americans actually took pace in the escape, they were in the camp and their characters helped as described above, but all Americans were moved from that camp to another camp before the escape took place. Apparently to sell the movie to the cinema going Americans the two actors McQueen and Graner were give major roles
