Good quality, attractive box that’s not expensive
Good price. Arrived promptly. Nice looking box. Didn’t take long to fit a camera and install in the garden. There is mention of the option of an extra light that can be fitted if necessary. I decide, after experimenting, that I would cut a similar light hole on the opposite wall of the box and cover it with semi-transparent plastic (milk bottle stuff seems just right) so I hope this will optimisé picture quality.

Very well made and sturdy nest box.
Well this nest box just arrived and I am very pleased with it. I have bought this as a birthday present for my mum, and I have a camera on order to go with it. The box is nicely made out of cedar which is naturally weatherproof and does not need treating. This is the best choice as treated timbers can be harmful to birds or discourage them from using the box. The timber is surprisingly thick and well constructed giving the feeling that this is very well made and will last a long time. The entrance hole is fitted with a metal ring which prevent mice, rats or squirrels from gnawing at the edges to enlarge the hole to get at the eggs/chicks. It also limits the entrance, letting only small birds such as tits use the box. A sturdy hinge is fitted at the back of the roof, as is a metal edged hole for hanging the box. There is also a small hole at the back to allow the camera cable out without it getting pinched under the lid. A metal bracket is attached to the inside of the roof lid for mounting the camera which will make life easier. Finally, there is a hole on one side of the box covered with a Perspex window. This is intended to let light in to the camera. For some reason, this is attached by a single screw and is clearly designed so that it can be rotated away from the hole - I just don't know why! The only negative thing I have to say about this nest box is that for some reason, the hinged lid is screwed down. Why have a hinge enabling easy access, if you are going to use screws to close it and prevent easy access? A simple hooked catch would have made more sense. Apart from that one minor negative, I think this is a great product and I am really happy with my purchase.

A well made box (I slightly modified mine).
I purchased one of these for my wife in February 2015, after buying her a camera for Christmas the year before. I'm ashamed to say that it took me until May 2018 to install it! The box and its fittings are sturdy and well made, and the camera clip is well positioned so as to be out of the way, but convenient for getting the camera angle just right. The perspex window allows plenty of light through in order to get a clear camera shot. I made a couple of changes to the box before installation: I have noticed that boxes mounted with just one screw can move in high winds, so I also fitted a right-angled bracket to the underside of the box. The bracket was also handy for fitting the excess cable to. The cable slot at the back of the box was not convenient for flush fitting to a wall, as the cables would cause an obstruction. Instead, I made a small slot in the side of the box for the main cable, and housed all of the plugs etc. on the underside of the lid. The bracket fitted to the lid was ideal for slotting a cable tie through for securing the wires and plugs (see photos). This also keeps the plugs protected from the elements. We have had boxes hung for years before a bird has nested in one. This one is quite the des. res. so we are hoping for something to happen a bit sooner! Update on 19th May 2019: A nest with 7 eggs so far and plenty of activity (see photos). Update on 5th June 2019: Baby blue tits being fed (see video).

Watch the Birdy!
I bought this for my dad for a birthday present and he really liked it. It made a nice change from the usual socks and chocolate and he went straight outside to put it up. The box is a good size and very sturdy. It's made of cedar wood so there's no need to weatherproof it, but of you want to, there's no reason not to, just make sure that what you use is not too strongly perfumed. If you want to install a little camera to watch the birds nesting, this box is all ready to go, and the perspex window on the side is a good size and lets in plenty of light. I searched for a couple of days before deciding on which box to buy and I'm glad I chose this one. It wasn't cheap, but neither was is overly expensive. It was certainly worth the money paid for it as it's good quality and a cheaper version probably wouldn't withstand the wild British weather as well.

Scared our blue tits off for a while - worth trying obscuring the window
[updated Feb 2020 - we did get some blue tits in the end late in the season after I added the bubble wrap to the window. They nested successfully. This year we’ve now had a blue tit pair (kids coming home?) and a great tit checking it out a lot over the last week or so. So we’re hopeful we will see nesting again. Still don’t feel the design is that good making it harder to use than is necessary. Quality only so so. When I opened the lid to clean it out, the screws holding the hinge all just pulled out. They are tiny and never going to hold properly in softwood.] Seems fine for the price. Bought because the ones we had did not have a window. There is a clip on the lid for fitting a camera, but this would not hold the Greenfeathers wifi camera well as far as I could see. So removed that and just screwed the bracket supplied with the camera instead. There is a slot on the back so this can be hung on a screw, but this seemed pretty insecure to me. Other reviewers have fitted additional brackets to steady the box. I just removed it and screwed through the back of the box. A little awkward as the lid has limited opening and the camera gets in the way a bit, but doable. The lid will not open far once this is fitted on a wall. I guess you’re supposed to lift it down first. I found that with camera adjustments, adding an SD card etc, I had to open a few times, so this could also be better. It’s a shame that some of the features have not been designed and tested sufficiently. It just makes installing a bit more fiddly than needed, but nothing major. Will probably treat ours to improve its life maybe add a bit of felt or slate, but that will have to wait until the end of this season. We’ve had a pair of blue tits checking it out a few times, but sadly they did not nest (we've had blue tits nesting in the previous box for the last ten years). I believe that the clear window deterred them. In the product images it is frosted, but the one we received was not. They spent a long time checking the window out from inside and out. I can only imagine that they have no concept of a clear window (what in nature could they have encountered like this) and so think it is just an unsafe entry point for predators. Seems like the manufacturers cut costs by not providing a frosted window - we're bitterly disappointed to be missing out on blue tits altogether this year due to buying this box. I did add some bubble wrap in the end, but too late unfortunately.
