I would certainly choose this over the more expensive one. looks great and certainly good enough for display purposes as well as being fully functional Review: OMGosh.... Lovely - Quite simply..... I'm blown away by this little thing. Learning the principles of Stirling's Hot Air engine is simple but seeing it work on mug of tea is quite unbelievable. The video of it running on a mug of very hot water was taken after it had been happily running for five minutes.... Lovely and superbly made.... Good enough to be an interesting ornament.

Interesting gimmick, but not a kit
First and foremost, although this is described a kit, it comes almost completely assembled. The only thing to do is put the fly wheel spindle on the motor, and connect the hooks from the pistons. This is just as well, as the instruction leaflet is of no use whatsoever. The device is simple to operate, and will start after just a few seconds after being placed over a mug of boiling water. It ran for only a few minutes when I first ran it, but a couple of things improved this. Firstly, I gently bent the supporting forks so that they weren't gripping the spindle so tightly, but not so far that the pistons rattled. Secondly, I ignored the instruction not to use oil, and applied the smallest drop of a very light lubricating oil to the spindles and connections, though not to the cylinders to prevent oil getting in to the piston (which appears to be foam rubber). This gave me a run time of approaching an hour. What this is crying out for is a detailed description about how Stirling engines work. This would make it a truly educational toy rather than just a gimmick. Still it makes an interesting talking point, and will keep children amused, at least for the first couple of times it runs.

A fascinating gift.
A present for my son. It only took 30 seconds to assemble it. Very good build quality and worked well on the first go. The temperature of your tea / coffee will set the speed of the flywheel. Great Fun.

Smooth running
I don't usually leave reviews, but this purchase has been a delight. It was easy (if a bit fiddly) to assemble. I set it on a freshly poured green tea, and I worked flawlessly, initially spinning fast but slowing as the tea cooled. I timed it to see how long it would keep going, and it managed 48 minutes! Great value product!

Great value for money.
Easy to assembly, and works well. Remarkably - you can put it on your coffee cup. Once the wheel stops its at good drinking temperature! Great novelty gift for someone and great to look at even when stationary

Great 'lil spinner
Lovely little example of a Stirling engine. Runs smooth as ice straight out the box and if it gets a bit squeaky (like mine in the vid) you can easily unmount the flywheel and just scribble a bit of pencil in the mounting to lubricate. Love the little pumping noise too

Good little Unit arrived damaged
A neat design but arrived with a crack in the glass cylinder so you'll not work Had to be returned.... Shane could do with a little more care in packaging
