The lighs and maple leaves are rain safe. But the battery case is not. You can put a small plastic bag over the battery case to keep the rain out of it. Then you can use it outside.

NO, Fall lights don't have remote and timer function.

Q: How do you open the battery box? I've tried everything nearly to the point of breaking it.

There is an arrow on the battery box cover. Push the battery box cover in the direction of the arrow to open it.
