Keuka Lake Here We Come!
My family and I ventured out to Keuka Lake in the Finger Lakes Region of Central New York State in August. My daughter wanted the paddle boards to come along for the ride, so I wanted a "lock" solution to keep the boards safe on top of the car. I didn't want to bring the boards inside the hotel room due to their size. The steel core straps were secure during the journey (I would still check any straps periodically along any trip), and kept both paddle boards in place. Even though anyone could of most likely taken the boards off the car even with the security straps in place, it would of taken a bit of work to cut or loosen them up in order to slide the boards out. I had a piece of mind during my entire stay driving all over the area with the boards in place. They were worth the money. Both boards also made the trip back home. Familiarize yourself with the instructions that come with the straps and try them out before a trip. I thought the straps were broken, but then I remember a reviewer stating the straps needed to be threaded in a certain way. Once I figured it out, they were lock tight. I also wanted to mention, I can see the material cover fraying over time. Even though I used these only a limited amount of times, I noticed the fabric slightly fraying when the cam starts locking the straps in place. Locally, I will still use my nylon straps. For longer trips I will use the secure core lock downs. They are great robust straps for my intended purpose.

It works when used properlu.
A lot of reviewers said the keys were weak and I agree they are made of soft brass apparently. However I feel that kept lubed with a light oil or graphite powder (keep it off the white board/boats) made for locks, it will work if care is used. Upon installing the first strap I found that following the instructions it worked perfectly. So I ordered the second strap which I'll put on tomorrow. The keys with the 2nd strap seem a little bit huskier. Maybe they have been paying attention and have gotten a little bit of an upgrade in the key design Just a causal look see not a close inspection. Try these straps out and treat them with some care. I would remove them if you are just going on a day trip and use standard straps. IMHO, I consider them security devices not great tie downs since they don't have any stretch like a normal strap. Put the locking straps in the trunk in case you need them. If your kayak, windsurfers or whatever are stored out side a cover to protect the straps and or the boat would be a good idea. Check Amazon for silver covers with a bungee sewn in. I don't have the name handy but they are cheap enough that replacement in a year or two would not be too painful. Most covers seem to not endure in full on summer sun. Guess I'll go find the cover and review them. Use the straps as the instruction card directs. They aren't perfect but they would discourage a thief when placed to deter thieves from easy pickings.

Seems like a very sturdy lockable strap
Have used only twice so far but this strap is quite sturdy and the steel core running through it seems like a good diameter to prevent someone from cutting it. It tightens up well. I've read that the key is flimsy so have been careful when locking and unlocking and so far so good. At this point I think this is a good product, is well made and reasonably priced compared to others. Will know more over time.Update: after using several more times I still feel this is a good strap. But the key is flimsy and I can see how it would easily break if you "muscle it" too much when you are trying to pull the key out...just be gentle with it.

Ok straps.
I thought this was going to be a locking rachet tie down, but it ended up being just a locking strap. I should have read the description better maybe. It works for what I needed so I kept them. Seem to be sturdy and thick. Not sure how durable the lock would be if someone would actually tried to break into it, but it is for sure a deterrent.

Customer Satisfaction
Product works as designed and secures the item to my car rooftop. One drawback is that the straps act like a wick when it is raining and the water runs down the strap and into my vehicle when I strap the secured item to my roof. I do not have a roof rack external to the vehicle so if you are running the strap through your car make sure you have a plan if rain is in the forecast.

One length
Bought to lock down the battery cover on my pontoon boat. Lock mechanism is a little finicky, but a little finesse gets it to work. If the handle would fold down the other direction, you could get the strap nice and snug, as it is now, you can snug it up as tight as you can, but when you lever the locking hinge down, it adds some slack. Also would be nice if there was a way to cut off the excess strap length. As it is, it would ruin it to try and cut it...but I guess that's the trade off for making it hard to cut, it's more secure from thieves.

Best Option I Found
I'm really scratching my head wondering how Thule et al justify the crazy markup for their versions of this. This one seems more than adequate. The nylon strap itself is very sturdy, and it has a strong cut-resistant wire running through it. The locking mechanism is functional--one would really, really have to want to get into this thing and have some very tough tools handy.I use this to secure something on my Jeep roll bar that might be attractive to thieves. Someone would have to be insane to try to get this thing off. I mean, it's not diamonds, but still. This is a good quality and affordable strap.I'm just deathly afraid of losing the keys. I'd never get it off. :)

Must buy!
Work wonderfully! My boyfriend broke a key so making extra is a must. I love these things traveled from austin Texas to Baton Rouge Louisiana with no trouble! Left the kayaks on the car the whole time we camped and stayed at a hotel with no worries! Definitely recommend these for anyone with a kayak!Update*** it's been well over a year of our straps talking a beating rolling around in the back of the truck, left outside in the elements often, dropped in sand, you name it...it's happened. They're still going strong! In fact 3 straps got lost in a move and I went ahead and bought another set. Which has 3 steel cores in it!

Locked up my batteries
We have had a rash of thefts lately. Propane tanks and travel trailer batteries. I used this cable to lock down my battery boxes and nothing lost in the last month. Hopefully these creeps have moved on Terry
