To sum up " A country called Childhood" is one of the best book written by any Indian English writer. This is not only a childhood memoir of Dipti Naval but also excellent narration of lot many important historical events of India including that of British India's administration territory from first hand experience. Indians' lives in Burma & events leading to their exodus are so elaborately narrated gathered from author's own people will definitely enhance knowledge of many who are not aware of this chapter of history. This is different from Amitav Ghosh's presentation in " Glass palace" as Dipti Naval presents it from her mother & other family members' experience.Her description of nature & persons are so perfect that you feel as if you are seeing them with your own eyes. Words are beautiful, analogues used to describe sounds , environment are superb. Dipti's non hesitant revelation of childhood desire & delusion towards film land infact a short of determination in such beautiful language is worth reading. This book will definitely bring back childhood memories of every person who was a sensible child especially those who were born in 1950s & 60s.The flow of the book with best of description of each & every event kept me absorbed all along reading." A Country call Childhood" is a must read book for book lovers. I expect much more to come from our favourite actor, writer Dipti Naval.

Hi, i'm Edith D'Sa from Goa. I bought the book for two reasons Amritsar and Sacred Heart School. I am half way through and absolutely charmed. Its my country too. We lived on the first floor of the post office in Katra Sher Singh Amritsar, the ground floor was the post office my father was the postmaster and his office on the ground floor, and I studied in Sacred Heart School Amritsar. the book is so precious and dear to me every page brings memories to me. It is beautifully written book, it speaks directly to my heart. Love you Deepti.

The childhood story of Deepti Naval and her family

The book is about a little known actress with a big ego. She describes her childhood and incidents in it at great length. Well written but a bit boring

Beautiful, compassionate, and yet passionate. It resonates with every mind which experiences childhood and steps on the doorsteps of adulthood. The memoirs are full of personalities which make Amritsar a city which it was. I bought this book for my wife on her 71 birthday. She told me often that she was a friend of Deepti, Both studied together at Khalsa college Amritsar. Her name was Inder Bala Sahni, today Laungia, called also just Gogi or Indu. Lives today in Germany. It is very good written book .I enjoyed it to know Past in India, panjab and Burma. My father fought in Burma War with Japanese for the Britische Army in 1943, after he returnd from Agypt war with Germans. It is very interesting to know of Deepti Childhood, Amritsar, division of India in 1947, village life etc. I recommend this book to buy and read.

I bought the book knowing fully well that it wouldn't be a film tale of a Bollywood actress and I would warn people if they are expecting that. It is a garland of memory snippets that the author has lovingly put together. Deeper Naval is an engaging writer. Her anecdotes are full of Hindi and Punjabi words but her English flows easily too.
