This is an outstanding book. Lots of photos and great history.

... This is not a book loaded with color plates of the artist's work. I blew right past where the fact that THIS IS A BIOGRAPHY was clearly indicated. If you need to SEE many large examples of the artist's work I'd recommend you buy a book here that will give you that to study, first - THEN go back for her bio. Just in case I'm not the only one not paying attention... And no, I haven't yet read this. Once I do, I'll update.

Comprehensive biography on the artist.

Without a doubt, this is an important book well worth reading. Julia Voss’ research findings are enhanced by her ability to bring you into the milieu of Klint and the Sweden in which she lived. The text covers a wide range of cultural and social issues as well as artistic ones accessibly. The translation is good and style appealing. Unfortunately, I listened to this on audible and it was a wasted credit. Even in English, Doria Bramante mispronounces many words she should have the basic cultural literacy to know. She pronounces bourgeoisie boog-wah-zay, to name but one example. To mispronounce French, Swedish, German, and one’s own native English takes some doing, but Bramante manages to do just that. Wrecking every Swedish word is bad enough in a book about a Swede. But to have endless errors inflicted on the listener with inexplicable come hither seductive passages, high drama, bizarrely placed sarcasm, and whispery passages in an unemotional biography is bizarre. Do also take a look at Daniel Birnbaum’s “Anna Cassel: Saga of the Rose,” which alleges some of Klint’s works were painted by her close friend and associate. The discoveries about the elusive Klint are far from over. Continuing to research Klint is worth the effort as new discoveries and controversies continue to emerge. I hope this book will be updated, and hopefully be re-recorded by someone worthy of it.

The execution of the horizontal plates is embarrassing. The could have easily oriented them to fit the pages. Lazy. and brings down the quality of the book.

An excellent biography of a fascinating artist. I feel that Hilma af klint herself identified Julia Voss as the perfect writer of her biography! The amount of effort and research put into this biography must have been exhausting considering all Hilmas correspondence etc was in Swedish.

Clearly biased, dubious and even erroneous at time. The choice of the paintings isn’t the best and there are only a few. The kind of work that disguise personal opinions under an academic methodology. But can you really study history and art if you are full of prejudice ? It seems rather unprofessional to me.

Brilliant biography of the working life of af Klint. Fascinating to read about how her work was created via spiritualism and her struggles to be accepted in the art world. Has several lovely colour plates showing her work
