Best and most versatile crayon
Not llke kid's wax crayons---these are quite unusual. You can apply like a wax crayon or wash it out with water. Stencil it, stamp it or draw-and-wash. The metallic colors work well on dark paper especially. When I last visited some friends in Germany, the big trend was (and still is) crafting with paper, Cricuts and art supplies like wax crayons, dark paper stock and color inks. Marabu makes a lot of these supplies --a German company that is feeding this hugely popular activity. The crayons are also good if you like doing mixed media artwork and journaling. I love working on dark paper and getting luminous effects for insect images, butterflies, flowers and fanciful creatures. The application stays soluable for about six hours then fixes itself. Then the artwork is relatively stable for display or sending as greeting cards. The crayons come in a plastic casing rather like a lipstick and can be twisted up as the crayon wears down. They are pretty soft. Note: if you have kids, they will devour these quickly as they are as soft as lipsticks. So hide them away and make sure your kids or grands have some crayons, maybe big fat ones, so they feel included without ruining your art supply budget.

Must have mistakenly bought metallic colors - my mistake.
For drawing marks on art canvases but I didn't want METALLIC colors.

Creamy and Fun!
I tried out the Marabu Art Crayons on a nice, toothy watercolor paper and they performed well. They have a soft, creamy texture - akin to drawing/coloring with butter - and cover well. I tried them on a smooth hot press paper also, and did not enjoy the experience as much. They really do better with a little tooth to grab them. The crayons cover the paper well which tells me they would work fine on any color of paper that fits your fancy. They also blend together very nicely and the colors combine as expected (yellow and blue make green, magenta and blue make purple, etc, there is sadly no red). Adding water did not do a lot other than turn them more pastel than vivid. If left alone, they dry out and are no longer blendable on the page by the next day. I would probably still use a fixative over these if you make something you want to preserve. The metallic is subtle, just enough for a little sparkle, but not so much it looks like a unicorn danced across the paper. The plastic holder with the twist up feature to advance the crayon is nice. These are so soft I imagine otherwise they would quickly turn to a gooey mess if held nakedly in a hand.Overall, these are a decent soft crayon. I have been looking for interesting activities and art media to use with nieces and nephews and I think we are going to thoroughly enjoy these!

Gorgeous Colors
What wonderful, gorgeous colors! I love the shimmer to them. I like the way that they can spread with water. I have discovered that Marabu also makes these crayons without the shimmer but still water soluble. I love shimmer, glittery paints, crayons and pencils, but I know that sometimes you need something quieter for background work. I like the fact that these crayons have a twistable base which is safer for the crayons to keep them from breaking off. This is especially important for children that don't know their own strength when coloring. They say that after 24 hours, the crayons are wipe resistant and doesn't move or smear and from the page. I swatched these and can see that is true. When I run my fingers over the paint, nothing moves, even the spots where I had drawn a picture and then used water in a brush to spread it, it is permanent and nothing has disappeared. I really like these. These are perfect for mixed media artists. For fine details, I would suggest using a small brush to pick up the crayon to draw it into the smaller areas or us a wet brush with the colors in it to paint the areas that are too fine for the large crayon head.I appreciate the opportunity to try these out. Thank you.

Very nice watercolor crayon set with lipstick consistency - results will vary with different paper
This is an attractive set of ten vivid, shimmering water soluble crayons. Since water was involved, I did most of the testing on Canson Montval watercolor paper, but also did some swatching on HP Premium smooth copy paper.First, these crayons have an incredibly soft, lipstick consistency. I think the rough texture of the cold press watercolor paper, doesn't show them off at their best - I think the tooth of the paper may trap too much pigment causing it not to dissolve properly with water. The smooth HP paper allowed them to lay down much more evenly and it showed off the shimmer effect better, but it doesn't take water well.On the watercolor paper I laid down some horizontal lines of each color. then I went over it with a water brush. There was some pigment movement, but the lines did not dissolve in the water despite heavy scrubbing with the brush. Again, I attribute this to the texture of the paper. The crayons worked much better on the watercolor paper when I used the wet brush to lift pigment directly from the crayon and then applied it to the paper.Blending two shades together on the paper was difficult on watercolor paper. I think this would be better done on a palette where you can scribble colors and then use your brush to mix them in the palette before putting them on paper. On watercolor paper, the shimmer effect worked best with the lemon yellow shade, but the shimmer showed up well on all the colors with the smooth paper. My conclusion is that these will work well on a smooth paper that is heavy enough to take some water - possibly hot press watercolor paper, or a heavier, smooth Bristol.
