An organized begaining
Pimsleur ESL English for Mandarin SpeakersPimsleur's technique is basically well designed for beginners willing to rely on repetitive practice of a few oral expressions in English. These disks do no more that perk an interest in going on to buy the available MP-3 set of 30 lessons and associated readings exercises. I purchased those for my wife and was disappointed that they have not been developed into a more complete syllabus as has the Mandarin 1-III lessons I also purchased. She is now able to hear spoken English better and has a beginning feel for some of the grammar needed. It seems that all young Chinese grammar and high school children are required to study English, but few are exposed to oral English and here Pimsleur may be performing a service. The lessons can be listened to sequentially and then randomly for review.

Great English course for Chinese who can't read the Western alphabet
I bought this for a friend and she loves the course. I'd especially recommend for audio learners or people who are not comfortable/familiar with the western alphabet (ABC) - olders relatives, etc.The course is based on listening and repetition of sounds. American English
As my wife is Chinese and knows very little English my first thoughts were to teach her the language, although I am ESOL trained the Chinese to English Pimsleur CD set from Amazon I felt would be the perfect edition.What a Mistake! every five minutes I was having to correct the translation from American English into UK English, I do not consider the American way of speaking English as correct, for example I'm here instead of I am here. I have been to China and been Horrified at the way some of them are being taught English by American Speaking Teachers who do not have a clue about the true English LanguageNOT a GOOD BUY.
