I have a 20 yo Carrier 2.5 ton central ac system and I try to keep it running smooth and quiet. I change the air filter often and clean the coils (inside and outside) once a year since I live in So. Florida. This year I decided to install a new the capacitor and contactor relay on the outside compressor. The old ones were still working but the compressor sounded like it was straining upon startup and while running. Worn and pitted contact points can be the problem. These parts are $15 to $20 each and easy to replace for the DIY. This 45 + 5 uf Genteq capacitor fit perfectly. The 40 amp 2 pole relay was also an easy replacement, just be sure to turn off the electric breaker and disconnect before you touch anything. Now my AC unit starts and runs super smooth and quiet. Worth ever penny and takes less than an hour. Plus I saved a ton of money vs. calling a repairman.

Capacitor worked great! This is a very common problem that will keep your AC condenser unit (outside radiator with fan) from running. Easy way to tell it's bad is if it's bulging on top where the connectors are. I opened the access panel after shutting off power at the disconnect and just replaced the capacitor by switching the wires over to the new one. Turned power back on and turned on my Thermostat on cool. Unit fired right up.
