Nice book, simple and not too dense. Was sent horrible rental condition. Twice.
First, let me say I like this book. It's a nice break and if you are a Physics major it will be a breeze. Well-spaced writing, it does not bore you. Useful tables and key concepts announced and delivered. Not too dense. The condition of the book, however, was abysmal and the due date is too early for the semester final. Who exactly is managing amazon prime rentals? Five years later it could have been used maybe ten times? Or is that not how it works? How can there be this much wear and tear?So I sent it back twice the last one I received was the absolute worst and so when I called they just refunded my money again and said keep it. Yay free book right? But not I want a better copy and I'd rent it again if I thought for one minute I'd get a better copy or if the due date reflected the actual end class date of 12/19 or 12/20, I'd rent another.I like the book. It makes me feel like I'm back in high school!

Good paper, excellent material, non-coloured figures.
Nice material, but difficult to study technical material with black&white figures

Adequate
I used this text in a graduate material science course for civil engineers with little to no background in material science and while in some areas it proved useful, overall I didn't take much away from using it. This is one of those "baby step" the reader through the reading then expect them to become a full-fledged practicing material scientist secluded to his laboratory only exposing himself to the art of his field 24-hours a day when it comes to the questions. Many questions had me scratching my head as to how I was supposed to glean the information from the text to solve them. I would not recommend.

This book is not too bad. I think the author could have gone a little more in depth on certain topics. It serves as a great reference to quickly refresh oneself about various topics. The text is easy to read, but does fail to be as engaging as some other texts.

This book is hot garbage
Shackelford does a terrible job explaining a large number of concepts and assumes an incredible amount of knowledge from the reader for an introductory textbook. You will find yourself googling explanations frequently after reading about it in the text because the text is simply inadequate and jumps straight to answers in examples. I have used free texts where every chapter was written by a different author that did a better job than this text. If this is the best choice of text for an introduction to materials science, I pray for anyone hoping to pursue a career in materials science.

Great book for introducing Material science to students
Great book for introducing Material science to students. A lot of pictures/ diagrams, content is easy and interesting to read. Doesn't require several readings of a passage to understand the material.

Better than my professor
Better than my professor, just as boring but at least the textbook doesn't make me get up for 8:30 lectures
